SCIAC Success Continues For Athenas
In the first game of the second round of SCIAC play, the CMS
Athenas beat the Whittier Poets 6-0. The Athenas are still
undefeated (7-0) in SCIAC play and 10-3-0 overall.
The Athenas came out hard right off the back and put two in the
back of the net in the first eight minutes. Brittney Watson
(JR, Sammamish, WA) put a through-ball into Rebecca Pedroza (JR,
Las Vegas, Nevada), who laid it back to Megan Kum (SR, Pasadena)
who finished from the top of the 6-yard line. Two minutes
later, Ashley Green (JR, Seattle, WA) dribbled to the end line and
put a cross in to Watson, who put a low, hard ball into the back of
the net from the top of the 18-yard box. For the next thirty
minutes, the Athenas struggled with repeated offsides calls, before
Carolyn Campbell (FR, Irvine) put one in unassisted in the 35th
minute. Five minutes later, Amanda Drasny (JR, San Jose)
lobbed one in from 30 yards out to put the Athenas up 4-0.
With just a few minutes to go in the half, Kelsey Rose (SO, Irvine)
sent a ball in from the outside, where Drasny passed it off to
Katherine Jarvis (SR, Monrovia [pictured]) who finished, to put the
Athenas up 5-0 at half.
The Athenas had a slow second half, again struggling with the
offsides trap, but pulled out their 6th and final goal in the 87th
minute. Heather Marra (JR, Phoenix, AZ) dropped a ball back
to Jarvis, who crushed the ball into the back of the net.
Keeper Erica Jones (SO, Tempe, AZ) earned the shutout and the
Athenas won 6-0 over the Poets.
According to the latest NSCAA rankings, the Athenas are again
ranked 15th in the nation and 2nd in the West for this week.
CMS hosts Pomona-Pitzer (5-4-2 overall and 9th in the West) on
Wednesday, October 10th at 7 pm.
