Athenas Down Cross Street Rivals

The CMS Athenas beat the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on the road 2-1 on Saturday.  It was an exciting game not only because of the close score [this was the Athenas' sixth one goal game this season] and the rivalry between the two teams, but also because CMS had not beaten Pomona-Pitzer on the road since 2003.  CMS improved to 4-3 overall and are the only team with a 2-0 SCIAC record.

In the first half, the Athenas dominated on the field, beating the Sagehens to nearly every ball.  In the fourth minute CMS scored on a ball that was crossed by Rebecca Pedroza (JR, Las Vegas, NV) and headed into the goal by Laura Hagen (FR, Bellevue, WA).  CMS defense did a great job of limiting potential shots on goal and the keeper Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (SO, Santa Fe, NM) saved several shots on goal.  In the first five minutes of the second half, the Sagehens scored a goal off of a free kick and tied the score.  The Athenas then came back with a winning goal in the 70th minute.  It was scored by Courtney Funk (SO, Sutter Creek [pictured]) who one-touched a ball played back by Hagen.

CMS hosts La Verne in their next game.  It will be at 4:00 on Wednesday, September 19 on Pritzlaff Field.
