Athenas Hammer Overmatched Poet Squad

In their first SCIAC game of the season, the CMS Athenas outshot the Whittier Poets 33-0 and won the game 9-0.  The Athenas are now 1-0-0 in conference play and 3-3 overall.

It was a bit of a slow start as the Athenas had many opportunities to score, but struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.  Midway through the first half Ashley Green (JR, Seattle, WA) finally was able to break the 0-0 tie with a rocket shot to the corner of the goal to put CMS up by one.

After that initial goal the Athenas offense was unstoppable.  Eight minutes before the end of the first half, center midfielder Nicole Sady-Kennedy (SO, Ladera Ranch) scored off a gorgeous cross to the top of the six from Kelsey Rose (SO, Irvine).  The Athenas put two more in the back of the net before half time.  Meredith Doyle (FR, Hidden Hills) scored on a breakaway and Shannon Dockham (SO, Martinez) put one in the net off a cross from Heather Marra (JR, Phoenix, AZ).

The Athenas kept up their high level of play for the second half as well.  Right off the bat freshman forward Arlyn Madsen-Bond (FR, Cambridge, MA) scored not one, but two goals within five minutes of each other.  Forward Katherine Jarvis (SR, Monrovia) had a pair of goals in the half as well.  Her first was a hard left footed shot off a cross from Brittney Watson (JR, Sammamish, WA) into the top left hand corner of the goal, impossible for the keeper to save.  Ending the night in scoring for the Athenas was forward Laura Hagen (FR, Bellevue, WA) who broke through the Poets defensive line and beat the keeper on a hard shot to the corner of the goal.  Goalkeepers Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (SO, Santa Fe, NM) and Erica Jones (SO, Tempe, AZ) secured the shutout for the Athenas.

The Athenas next play at Pomona-Pitzer this Saturday (September 15th) at 11 am.
