Stags Battle Tigers To A Draw

The Occidental Tigers were able to hold the CMS Stags to a 1-1 draw on a gloomy and rainy Saturday morning at Pritzlaff Field in Claremont. The Stags started things off on the right foot, netting home a goal midway through the first half. Michael Nguyentat (SO, Carmichael) knocked an exquisite through ball over the Tigers defense to a sprinting Ryan Weaver (SO, Monument, CO [pictured]) who easily beat the center backs to the ball and found the back of the net past the Occidental keeper. CMS hung onto the lead going into the break, but Alex Black pulled one back for the Tigers just 90 seconds into the second half with a shot from the left side of the box. The Stags had plenty of opportunities throughout the rest of the half to take the lead, but no one could capitalize and get the much needed three points to separate CMS from the rest of the pack in the SCIAC standings. After two periods of extra-time, the Stags had to settle for the tie and take away one point from the match.
CMS now has a conference record of 3-1-2 and sits in second place with Pomona-Pitzer. Weaver's goal was his second in as many games, and he now leads the team with three goals, along with Stefan Gonzalez (JR, San Gabriel) and Tomislav Zbozinek (JR, Paradise Valley, AZ). Next Wednesday, the Stags will visit the University of Redlands to challenge the first-place Bulldogs at Farquhar Field at 7:00 PM.
