CMS Baseball Caps Off Tuscon Invitational with 18-6 Win over Buena Vista

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team built a 9-0 lead and then put the game away with an eight-run eighth to capture an 18-6 win over Buena Vista on Sunday in its final game of the Tucson Invitational.
The Stags went 2-1 overall on the weekend, picking up an 8-4 win on Saturday against an Aurora team that came in ranked No. 16 in the country, before falling 9-8 to Hamline in the nightcap.
Marco Castillo drove in four runs with three different RBI singles to pace the CMS offense in its Sunday win. The Stags started out the game with a pair of two-out RBI doubles in the first inning from Julian Sanders and Brandon Rho.
The Stags tacked on three more in the second inning, capped off by a two-run single from Castillo to stretch the margin to 5-0. Castillo added another RBI single in the fourth, while Cade Kritsch had a bases-loaded RBI single as well to stretch the lead to 8-0.
Jack Potter added an RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 9-0, as starting pitcher PJ Wendler continued to keep the Buena Vista bats at bay through the first five innings. The Beavers finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before Nick Wilson got one of them back with an RBI double in the seventh.
After Buena Vista pulled within 10-5, CMS scored eight times in the eighth, all coming after a two-out error. Kallen Mueller had a two-run single, Tyler Shaw had an RBI double and Castillo capped off the CMS scoring with an RBI single. Buena Vista added one harmless run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a solo homer before the game was called due to the run rule.
On Saturday, CMS began the day with a big 8-4 win over Aurora, coming back from a 4-0 deficit. The Stags scored three times in the fourth, loading the bases and scoring their first on a walk to Jack Potter. Kritsch then had an RBI groundout with a second run coming home on an error. In the seventh, Castillo tied it with an RBI single, and after an error put CMS in front, Rho tacked on an RBI single and Kritsxh added a sacrifice fly.
Jarrett Korson went seven innings to get the win on the mound, pitching four straight scoreless innings as CMS came back. Nick Dazell pitched the eighth, striking out two and Lalo Beron finished off the win with two Ks in the ninth. Potter was 2-for-2 and Wilson and Rho each finished 2-for-4.
The Stags then nearly came back to make it a sweep before falling 9-8 to Hamline. Miles Cook had a pinch-hit two run double in the bottom of the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate before the Stags came up one run short. Rho was 4-for-5 with the RBI for the Stags at the plate, while Paul Roche added a homer.
CMS will be back in action this weekend for a big three-game series with La Verne, facing the Leopards at home on Friday and then at La Verne for a doubleheader on Saturday.
