CMS Baseball Holds On for 12-9 Win Over Emory, Evens Series

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored six runs in the sixth to take an 11-5 lead and held on for a 12-9 win over Emory on Saturday afternoon to even the three-game series between the teams at a game apiece.

With the win, CMS improves to 3-2 as it tries to win the second series of the season so far, after taking two of three from George Fox two weeks ago. Emory slides to 4-2 overall on the year with the loss.

Tyler Shaw was 3-for-4 with three runs scored two RBI, Marco Castillo was 4-for-6 with three runs scored, and Julian Sanders had three RBI to lead the offensive outburst, while Nick Wilson was 2-for-2 with an RBI after pinch-hitting. Pieter van Wingerden threw two innings of no-hit relief in seventh and eighth to set it up for Lalo Beron, who closed the ninth for the save.

Shaw started the six-run sixth with a leadoff single and stole second, before moving to third on a Castillo single. Brandon Rho then singled up the middle to give the Stags the lead for good. After Sanders drove in a run with a grounder, Evan Kelly singled to load the bases, and Cade Kritsch drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Wilson followed with a single through the left side for the fourth run of the inning, Jack Potter added an RBI single, and Shaw had a sac fly in his second plate appearance of the inning to make it an 11-5 CMS lead.

Emory scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to close to within 11-9, but Castillo, Rho and Kelly singled in succession in the ninth to plate an insurance run. After Beron struck out two batters, Emory was able to load the bases in the ninth and bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Beron got the final out on a pop-up to Castillo as the Stags took the win.

The final game of the three-game series will take place tomorrow at 12 p.m. local time (9 a.m. Pacific) as CMS will try to come back to win its second straight series after dropping the first game.
