CMS Baseball Sweeps New Rochelle in Midweek Doubleheader Action

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored 22 runs between two games in a midweek contest with New Rochelle on its way to a two-game sweep by the final scores of 8-2 and 14-5, both in comeback fashion on Wednesday at Arce Field.

The Stags improve to 11-7-1 overall with the two-game sweep of the Blue Angels, who fall to 2-16 with the twin-bill losses. CMS pounded out 25 total hits between the two games and continued to pour it on offensively scoring eight runs in Game 1 and 14 runs in Game 2. The Stags have scored 54 runs over their last five games and have gone 8-2-1 over their last 11. 

Game 1 

The Stags fell behind in the first inning when Jan Matos Lorenzo opened the scoring with a single to center field scoring Adam Gonzalez and giving the Blue Angels a 1-0 lead through the opening frame. 

CMS answered back on a bases-loaded single to left by Marco Castillo which brought in both Ryan Motter and Evan Kelly to put the Stags on top 2-1 through three innings. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Stags drove in three runs on a home run by Sean Emery, a two-run shot after Carson Bridges led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Kelly launched a solo home run to left field as the Stags went back-to-back in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-1 through four innings. 

In the home-half of the fifth inning, CJ Novogradac hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot as the Stags hit four home runs including a solo homer in the sixth by Zach Clarke, his team-leading fourth of the season to stretch the lead out to the final score of 8-2. 

Cameron Cash (W, 2-2) earned his second win of the season after allowing one earned run over 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Danny Porras sent the Blue Angels to a loss in Game 1 with 1.0 inning of relief work with one strikeout, allowing one run on three hits as the Stags clinched the six-run victory. 

Clarke went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Castillo finished 2-for-4 with one double and two RBI, Kelly went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, Novogradac finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Emery finished 1-for-3 with two RBI in a victorious effort.  

Game 2 

Similar to Game 1, the Stags found themselves down early after surrendering three runs in the first inning capped by a Jared Edwards RBI single to left field to put the Blue Angels up 3-0 through the top of the first inning. 

In the home half of the frame, CMS answered back with one run on an RBI single by Clarke to score Henri Levenson and cut the deficit to 3-1. 

New Rochelle added to its lead in the top of the second when Darwin Nivar drove home a run on a sacrifice fly to score Ransel Pineda and give the Blue Angels a 4-1 lead. 

In the home half of the second, the Stags cut the lead to one run when Lalo Beron singled to center field and scored Calvin Koo who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Levenson grounded into a double play and Nick DeGallier scored cutting the deficit to just one run, 4-3 through two innings. 

The Stags tied the game in the third inning on a ground out by Novogradac but Clarke scored to knot the score 4-4 through three innings. New Rochelle quickly re-took the lead with a solo home run by Lorenzo in the top of the fourth and all of a sudden CMS found itself down by one run 5-4. through a quiet fourth inning for the bats. 

CMS broke out in the bottom of the fifth with nine runs on seven hits. Emery doubled to left to score Clarke and Kelly. DeGallier singled to second and Kevin Nakahara scored. Beron drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Levenson doubled to right field to score Kallen Mueller.

Later in the fifth, Kelly singled to right to score Levenson, and Motter capped the scoring with a two-run triple to center putting the Stags in front 13-5 and earning a 14-5 victory with one more run added on in the bottom of the sixth on a single to center by Jack Savard

The bullpen was out in full force in Game 2 for the Stags; Konnor Kwok tossed 2.0 innings, allowing four unearned runs on four hits with one strikeout, Nico Mannucci tossed 2.0 innings as well allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts, and Spencer McCann (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season by tossing a scoreless fifth. 

Levenson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Kelly tallied three hits in five at-bats with one RBI, Clarke went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, and Motter, Emery, Beron each drove in two runs in the offensive outpouring of 14 runs on 15 hits. 

CMS baseball is back in action on Fri. Mar. 29 against Whittier at Bill Arce Field with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The Stags open a three-game series against the Poets and travel to Whitter for Saturday's doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
