CMS Baseball Drops High Scoring Affair 14-12 to MIT

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team could not hold an 8-3 lead as a seven-run sixth inning lifts MIT past the Stags 14-12 in a high scoring affair on Sunday at Arce Field.
The Stags fall to 9-7-1 with the loss and MIT improves to 5-3-1 with the victory. The Engineers win two games during the day after defeating La Verne 9-3 earlier in the afternoon. CMS recorded 20 hits and 12 runs to score double-digit runs for the third consecutive game in the defeat. The loss ends a two-game winning streak for the Stags after taking two-of-three from SCIAC rival Occidental.
Marco Castillo led the Stags offensively going 4-for-6 with one double and two runs scored, Kevin Nakahara drove in three runs during his 3-for-6 performance with one double, and Zach Clarke plated three runs with two hits in five at-bats and one double during the two-run loss. Henri Levenson drove in two runs as he went 2-for-5 and seven Stags recorded multi-hit games.

Brandon Mitchell made his second start of the season and allowed one earned run on two hits over 4.0 innings with six strikeouts in the no-decision. Nick DeGallier (L, 0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning in-part on a seven-run frame for the visiting Engineers. MIT scored 14 runs on 13 hits and committed two errors.
MIT was led by Thomas Allison who drove in five runs with two hits including one double, and Matt Johnston who hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Engineers up 10-8 through five and a half.
CMS scratched across two runs in the ninth on a double by Nakahara and a bases-loaded walk by Clarke to cut the deficit to two. The Stags kept the pressure on with the bases loaded but Patrick Gavin grounded out to second base and the rally was for not, as CMS fell 14-12.
Truman Miller had two hits in two plate appearances with two runs scored and the catcher he replaced, Pat Shore, finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. In all, the 20 hits marked a season-high for the Stags along with the 12 runs.
CMS is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 27 against New Rochelle for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Stags jump back into SCIAC play on Mar. 29 against Whittier at Bill Arce Field.
