CMS Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Whitman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Baseball team extended its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Whitman by the scores of 3-1 in Game 1 and 2-1 in Game 2 on Sunday at Arce Field.
With the win, the Stags improve to 6-5 overall on the season and have won their last four games. Justin Hull (W, 3-1) tossed 6.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and one walk surrendering three hits in the Game 1 victory and Josh Cordova (W, 1-1) delivered 5.0 innings of one-hit scoreless from the mound in Game 2 to help lift the Stags to their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Game 1
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 5th inning when Carson Bridges opened the frame with a double to left field. Calvin Koo followed with a single to left to score Bridges and give the Stags a 1-0 lead. Truman Miller then reached on a throwing error by Blues third baseman David Johnson.
The wild throw sailed to the fence and Miller was able to advance to third and Koo scored easily on the miscue. The next batter, Ryan Motter, flew out to left field and Miller scampered home to tack on the third run of the inning on two hits and put the Stags in front 3-0 through five frames.
The three-run inning proved to be enough for the Stags as Hull, Nico Mannucci, and Danny Porras (S, 3) allowed one run over the 9.0 frames. Mannucci allowed the only Blues run in the top of the 8th inning on a balk to score Jerick Nomura cutting the lead to 3-1 which proved to be the final score.
Porras worked the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits but holding Whitman scoreless to earn his third save of the season.

Henri Levenson went 2-for-4, Motter finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, Koo and Miller each drove in a run and Bridges doubled during his 1-for-3 performance. Hull struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits in 6.2 scoreless-innings.
Game 2
In Game 2, the Stags bats got going early scoring one run in each of the first two innings. CJ Novogradac doubled to left field in the bottom of the first scoring Motter after he singled to the shortstop to begin the frame and advanced to second on a ground out to third.
In the second inning, Pat Shore doubled to the left-center gap and rolled it deep enough toward the fence to allow Bridges to score and extend the lead to 2-0.
Turns out, those two runs were the only ones needed as the pitching staff comprised of Josh Cordova, Brandon Mitchell and once again Danny Porras (S, 4) allowed three hits and one run over 9.0 innings and combined to strike out six with the three hits by Whitman coming from just two batters, Matthew Sox (two hits) and Kevin Nakamura (one hit).
Whitman threatened to close the gap in the 8th inning, scoring its only run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch of Kyle Reisman. Porras then locked in and struck out Nakamura and induced a fly out to left field by Jake Wishart to strand the bases loaded in a key situation.
Novogradac doubled as did Shore and Bridges recorded a two-hit game in four plate appearances to lead the Stags past the Blues 3-1 in the second end of the twin-bill.
Cordova tossed 71 pitches, 43 strikes to earn his first victory of the season and Porras was sparkling in his second appearance of the day to earn his fourth save of the campaign thus far.

Stags baseball are back in action on Mar. 19 against Principia at 1 p.m. at home and continue this non-conference segment of the schedule at Bill Arce Field against Bowdoin the following day on Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. CMS then travels to Occidental to re-open SCIAC play on Mar. 23 at 3 p.m.
