CMS Baseball Powers Past Redlands 8-2 in Non-SCIAC Matchup

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored eight runs on nine hits in a darkness-shortened eight-inning 8-2 victory over Redlands on Friday night at Bill Arce Field.
With the non-conference victory, CMS improves its record to 4-5 overall and remains at 2-4 in the conference. Redlands sees its record fall to 7-10 overall and stays 3-3 in the SCIAC. In all, seven Stags batters recorded a hit and Ryan Motter along with Zach Clarke recorded a pair of hits for the game. The eight runs marked the most runs that the Stags have scored since a 9-6 win over Lewis & Clark on Opening Day (2/8).
Motter, CJ Novogradac, and Marco Castillo each drove in two runs in the non-conference win. Motter was a part of five of the Stags eight runs, with three runs scored and two RBI. The Stags have won two games in a row and have scored 15 runs over the last two matchups against Redlands with a 7-6 victory in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Mar. 3.
The Stags used a productive first inning to stake themselves out to a 2-0 lead. Novogradac was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Motter scored after he led off the frame with a walk. CMS did not record a hit in the first frame but scored a second run on another hit batter, with Castillo recording an RBI after getting plunked by Bulldog's starting pitcher Michael Rishebarger (L, 1-1).

CMS threatened for more runs in the first but left the bases loaded with a fly out by Calvin Koo. In Spencer McCann's first inning of work in the top of the first, he stranded two runners on base after issuing a one-out walk to Cal Bridges and a two-out walk to Andrew Renteria but McCann earned a ground out by Chris Hardin to work his way out of a little bit of a jam.
In the second inning, the Stags put a run on the board after Truman Miller opened the frame with a double to left field, advanced to third base on a fly out to center field by Motter, and eventually scored on a ground out by Henri Levenson to put CMS in front 3-0 through two complete frames.

Redlands got on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring one run on two hits. Andrew Singh led off the inning with a walk and later in the frame Singh scored on a double to left by Renteria to reduce the lead to 3-1 through two and a half.
CMS was held scoreless in the third inning and then added a run in the fourth on two hits including a single to center field by Clarke scoring Motter after Motter reached by way of a single to lead off the inning. The Stags extended their lead to 6-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, both on a line drive to center by Motter scoring Carson Bridges and Patrick Gavin.

Through the sixth and seventh innings, the game remained scoreless. Redlands managed its second run of the game in the top of the eighth on a double to left field by Alex Olague scoring Renteria. CMS tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a single to right field by Novogradac scoring Motter and a single to left field by Castillo scoring Clarke prior to the game being called due to darkness with a final score of 8-2.
Motter paced the Stags getting on base four times and scoring three runs with a 2-for-3 performance alongside two walks. Clarke walked three times and finished his day 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI. Novogradac went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Castillo finished 1-for-3 with two RBI as well.
Nico Mannucci (W, 1-1) earned his first win of the season by tossing 0.2 scoreless in relief of starter McCann. Cameron Cash (S, 1) earned his first save of the season with 5.0 innings from the bump allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Cash was dominant over four of his five innings out of the bullpen to keep the Bulldogs bats silent and bounce back from a tough start a week ago.

For Redlands, Renteria went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI and Olague made one of his two plate appearances count as he drove in the Bulldogs second run with a double in the eighth inning and finished 1-for-2 with that one RBI. Overall the Bulldogs were held to two runs on six hits and struck out six times.
The Stags are back in action on Sunday, Mar. 10 with a doubleheader against the Blues from Whitman College in another non-conference matchup against an NWC opponent. The twin-bill is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the second game expected to start at 2 p.m.
