CMS Baseball Falls to Redlands at Bill Arce Field

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Baseball fell to Redlands 14-6 on Friday afternoon at Bill Arce Field. The Stags slip to 1-3 in the SCIAC and 2-4 overall.

Redlands (6-8, 2-2) evened its record in the SCIAC after dropping two-of-three to open conference play against Redlands last weekend. The Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the first three innings, including a nine-run second inning to defeat the Stags in the three-game series opener on Friday at Bill Arce Field. 

Left-hander Cameron Cash (L, 0-1) allowed six earned runs on four hits over 1.2 innings pitched and earned his first loss of the season in his second start of the campaign. Redlands got on the board in the top of the first when, with the bases loaded, Anthony Acosta (2-for-3, 3 RBI) flew out to center field and Aaron Singh (1-1, 4 BB) scored giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. 

Redlands tacked on nine runs in the second inning on an RBI-single by Brendan Moore (3-for-6, 3 RBI), a walk of Acosta, a hit by pitch of Sammy Diaz and a single to center by Alex Olague would push the score to 7-0. The second frame was capped by a bases-loaded triple by Payton Walsh extending the Redland's advantage to 10-0 through two innings. 

CMS got on the board in the fourth inning when Patrick Gavin (2-for-2, 1 RBI) singled to left field scoring Marco Castillo and then added five more runs in the sixth inning after Redlands added three runs in the top half of the frame to extend its lead to 14-1. The Stags scored the five runs on a single to center by Ryan Motter, bases loaded walk of Deji Andrew, a Lalo Beron ground out to third, and a Kevin Nakahara single to center field cutting the deficit to 14-6 through six frames. 

CJ Novogradac singled to center field in the seventh inning and Motter reached on an error moving Novogradac to second base, but Jack Savard lined out to shortstop to end the threat. Following the conclusion of the seventh inning, the game was called due to darkness and the Stags fell 14-6. 

Moore paced the Bulldogs with three hits and was one of three visitors with three RBI, including Payton Walsh (2-for-5, 3 RBI) and Acosta. Redlands tallied 13 hits and 14 RBI alongside 12 walks and left 13 on-base. 

CMS was led offensively by three batters, including Castillo who went 2-for-2 with one run scored, Gavin who finished 2-for-2, and Nakahara who recorded two RBI. Nick Dazell tossed 1.0 scoreless-inning allowing two hits and walking two with one strikeout as the pitching staff ran into some bumps in the road during the loss. 

The Stags are back in action on Sunday, Mar. 3 at Redlands with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CMS Baseball returns to Bill Arce Field on Mar. 6 to host Drew University at 2:30 p.m.
