Chapman Takes Two From Stags to Sweep Weekend Series

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman Panthers beat the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team by scores of 7-1 and 15-4 on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Stags over the weekend. The Stags struggled to get the offense going throughout the first eight innings of the day, finally breaking through for a run in the ninth inning of Game One. In Game Two, CMS and Chapman were tied 3-3 after three innings of play, but the Panthers outscored the Stags 12-1 in the final six frames to earn a 15-4 victory.

Game One – Chapman defeats CMS 7-1

Trey Smith (CMC) knocked in Ryan Motter (CMC) in the bottom of the ninth for the only CMS run of Game One. Motter was the most productive Stag offensively with a hit, stolen base, and a run scored in first game of the double-dip.

Chapman starter Tyler Peck went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing one run on four hits in his fourth win of the season. The Stags' offense was held to just two hits entering the bottom of the ninth. In the final frame, Motter was hit by a pitch with two away and Henri Levenson followed with a single to right field to put two runners on base. A wild pitch moved the pair into scoring position and Trey Smith singled through the right side to score the Stags' only run of the contest.

The ninth inning run was the only bright spot for the Stags at the plate in Game One. The first time through the order, CMS got two runners on base with CJ Novogradac (CMC) singling to lead off the second and Patrick Gavin (CMC) walking in the third. Both Novogradac and Gavin were erased on double play balls by the very next batter.

Peck continued his stellar start with three-up, three-down innings in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to face the minimum through six innings. Motter led off the seventh with a single and later stole second to get into scoring position, but he was stranded there after a pair of groundouts.

The Chapman offense was relatively consistent throughout the game, scoring runs in six of their nine trips to the plate. The Panthers built a 4-0 lead after four innings and added single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to claim the 7-4 victory.

Game Two – Chapman defeats CMS 15-4

The Panthers scored at least two runs in four of their nine trips to the plate, including six runs in the top of the ninth to close out the Stags in Game Two by a 15-4 final score. CMS scored three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3, but the Panthers scored 12 of the final 13 runs in the game to earn a 15-4 victory.

Ryan Motter, Chase Eller (CMC), and Alex Clemens (CMC) led the Stags with two hits apiece in the second game.

After scoreless innings in the first and second for both teams, the Panthers scored three times in the top of the third on four hits to take a 3-0 lead. The Stags immediately responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. Chapman starter, Christian Cosby, was charged with a pair of throwing errors and four wild pitches in the inning, assisting the Stags around the bases. With one out, Alex Clemens singled to third and came around to score on three wild pitches while Pat Shore (CMC) was up to bat. Later in the inning, Ryan Motter singled up the middle to drive home a run and Henri Levenson scored on a failed pick-off attempt.

After the Stags tied the game at 3-3, Chapman scored a run in the top of the fourth to take the lead back at 4-3 before adding three more runs in the fifth on back-to-back home runs.

With Chapman leading 9-3 in the eighth, the Stags scored a run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Zach Clarke (CMC) to cut the lead to 9-4.

The Panthers put the game away with six runs in the top of the ninth to claim the 15-4 victory.

After the doubleheader, the Stags fall to 15-19 overall and 7-11 in the SCIAC. CMS will next take the field on Friday when they host Whittier at 3:00 p.m. on Arce Field.
