Stags Held Scoreless in Series Opener at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team was held to three hits in an 8-0 loss against the Chapman Panthers on Friday afternoon. The Stags collected two hits in the top of the first with Ryan Motter (CMC) and CJ Novogradac (CMC) both singling. Those knocks combined with a walk to Chase Eller (CMC) loaded the bases, but CMS was unable to plate a run as a strike out left the bases loaded.

In the seventh, Kevin Nakahara (HMC) led off the inning with a single to account for the only other CMS hit of the game. He later stole second, but was left stranded after back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out ended the inning.

While the Stags were left looking for a clutch hit, the Panthers were finding consistent runs. The Panthers scored two in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-run double by Gavin Blodgett. Two innings later, Blodgett struck again with another two-run double to push the Chapman lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third.

The Panthers added to their lead with an RBI single by Jared Love in the bottom of the fifth. In the seventh Love knocked a two-run homer to left field to make it a 7-0 lead for Chapman.

An RBI double by Chapman's Tristan Kevitch in the bottom of the eighth completed a 5-5 day for the left fielder and scored the final run of the game, giving the Panthers an 8-0 lead.

In addition to their three hits, the Stags worked four walks including a pair by center fielder Trey Smith (CMC). Three different Stags swiped bases in the game with Motter, Smith, and Nakahara each collecting one stolen base.

On the mound, Nick DeGallier (CMC) took the loss for the Stags after allowing four runs on nine hits in three innings. Konnor Kwok (CMC) came on in relief and finished the game, tossing five innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

Matt Mogollon went the distance on the hill for Chapman, tossing nine scoreless innings for his second shutout of the season. He moves to 7-2 on the season and holds a 1.54 ERA after 70.0 innings on the mound.

CMS and Chapman will be back in action on Saturday morning when they play a doubleheader on Arce Field at 11:00 a.m. in Claremont.
