No. 15 Bulldogs Open Series With Win Over Stags

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team was held to four hits in a 7-3 loss against the No. 15 Redlands Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. The Stags took an early lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs answered with seven runs in the middle innings of the game to take a 7-2 lead. The Stags scored one run in the seventh on a wild pitch, but it was not enough and the Bulldogs held on for the 7-3 victory.
Kevin Nakahara (HMC), Chase Eller (CMC), Patrick Gavin (CMC), and Pat Shore (CMC) each collected one hit for the Stags.
The Stags opened the scoring on the afternoon with two runs in the top of the first. Back-to-back one-out singles from Nakahara and Eller started the rally and put runners on first and second. After a strike out, Patrick Gavin singled to right and an error by the Bulldogs' right fielder allowed all three runners to move up. Nakahara came around to score on the play, Eller moved to third, and Gavin landed on second. A wild pitch later, Eller scored and the Stags held a 2-0 lead.
The 2-0 CMS advantage held until the Bulldogs struck for three in the bottom of the third. Three-straight, two-out hits drove home three runs and Redlands took the lead at 3-2. Redlands threaten for more in the fourth inning, but CMS starter, Cameron Cash (CMC) worked around a lead-off double and held the Bulldogs off the board in the frame.
Redlands added three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.
CMS scored a run in the seventh without recording a hit thanks to a hit by pitch, a walk, and two wild pitches. Patrick Gavin led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and neither team scored in the eighth or ninth and Redlands earned the 7-3 victory.
The Bulldogs and Stags will finish their three-game series with a doubleheader on Arce Field Saturday. First pitch of Game One is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
