Stags Drop Sunday Matinee to Visiting Blues

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team wrapped up their opening weekend with a Sunday matinee against the Whitman Blues on Arce Field. The Blues scored in six different innings en route to a 19-6 victory. The Stags were held scoreless until the sixth inning when they plated four runs, but a six-run inning from the Blues in the eighth put the game away.

Whitman started their scoring in the second inning with three runs crossing the dish. The Blues added two more in both the third and fourth, before putting up a five-spot in the fifth to take a 12-0 lead.

When CMS came to bat in the bottom of the sixth the Blues held a 13-0 advantage, but the Stags put together a four-run frame to make it a 13-4 game. The Stags drove home four runs with RBI singles from Brandon Mitchell (CMC) and Carson Bridges (CMC) along with sacrifice flies from Spencer Abraham (CMC) and Deji Andrew (HMC).

After a scoreless seventh, the Blues put six runs on the board to take a 19-4 lead. CMS answered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a two-run double from Chase Eller (CMC) to the right-center gap.

Despite falling by a 19-6 final, the Stags used Sunday's game as a chance to work in a number of younger players into the line-up for multiple at bats

CMS moves to 2-2 on the season and will next take the field on Friday when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on Redlands at 11:00 a.m. in a non-conference game. The Stags will remain in Tucson for the weekend and play games against Sul Ross St. and Texas-Dallas on Saturday and Sunday.
