Kingsmen take two back from Stags in doubleheader

Thousand Oaks, Calif. – After a thrilling 5-4 victory over No. 16 Cal Lutheran on Friday, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team tried to play spoiler in Saturday's road doubleheader against the Kingsmen, but ended up falling in both games 5-0 and 5-2, respectively. The Stags (16-21, 10-14) finish the regular season tied for sixth with Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC while the Kingsmen (28-10, 18-6) conclude their season as regular season SCIAC Champions.

Marshall Pautsch brought the heat for Cal Lutheran in the first game of the doubleheader, throwing a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. Junior Chase Eller (CMC) went 2-for-4 for the Stags, but CMS could not break past Paustch's pitching and the Kingsmen's defense. Cal Lutheran put up runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after Trey Saito and Austin Kay hit back-to-back RBI singles. In the bottom of the sixth, Cheynne Giles knocked an RBI triple to right field and scored on a miss relay throw to give Cal Lutheran a 4-0 lead. After that, the Kingsmen never looked back.

The second game of the doubleheader did not start too hot for freshman starter Cameron Cash (CMC) as he surrendered two runs in the first inning. However, Cash kept his composure and threw four shutout innings afterwards to contain the Kingsmen's offense. The Stags finally got on board in the top of the fifth inning after freshman Henri Levenson (CMC) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score in a runner from third.

In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore CJ Novogradac (CMC) caught a big break thanks to a mistake from pitcher Scott Roberts. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Novogradac sped towards home plate after Roberts threw another wild pitch, tying the game at 2-2. However, the Kingsmen would take back the lead after Ryne Yamashiro scored on an error and Max Weinstein hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. Cal Lutheran added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Jauregui. Setup man Troy Frazier and closer Miguel Salud finished the game with a scoreless inning each to secure the win for Cal Lutheran.
