Stags drop final non-conference game of season

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Sunday's game against Williams College did not go in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team's favor as the Ephs (3-2, 0-0) managed to edge out the Stags (11-11, 5-4) with a 5-2 victory. In their final non-conference game of the regular season, the Stags had placed plenty of runners on base to keep the game close, but the Ephs' pitching and outfield play negated any of the Stags' attempts of putting together a rally.

Junior Trey Smith (CMC) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and senior Evan Opperman (CMC) went 2-for-3 with one run. Senior John O'Malley (CMC) pitched four innings of relief and struck out four. The Ephs saw plenty of production from Kellen Hatheway who finished the game with four hits, two RBIs, and two runs while Jack Roberts had two hits with an RBI. Sean Hager threw six innings and surrendered only one run to earn his first win of the season.

The Ephs plated one run in each of the first three innings and managed to keep the Stags scoreless with their well-composed defense. In the bottom of the fourth, Smith belted a deep fly ball to center field, but Adam Rugensburg caught it just in front of the fence for an out. In the top of the fifth inning, the Ephs advanced Jackson Parese on a sacrifice bunt after he hit a single to put him in scoring position. Hatheway lined a single to right field to make it 4-0 for the Ephs.

The Stags got on board in the bottom of the sixth with Opperman on second base when Smith hit a slicing groundball through the left gap for an RBI single. CMS almost rallied back in the bottom of the eighth with one out and runners on first and third. Smith once again produced a run with a deep sacrifice fly to right field, but the Stags could not capitalize afterwards.

In the top of the ninth inning, Williams College padded the lead with an RBI single from Hatheway and never looked back as Kyle Dean retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to save the game.

CMS Baseball returns to SCIAC play on Friday, March 31 as they host Redlands at Arce Field for a single game at 3 p.m.
