Stags unleash hitting clinic against Raptors

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The offense maintained its momentum for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team (10-8, 4-2) on Monday as the Stags posted up 19 runs in their second consecutive game. Following a 19-4 victory over Wesleyan (Conn.), the Stags crushed Bard College (1-5) with a lopsided 19-10 win. The game was an offensive slugfest as both teams combined for 36 hits, with the Stags responsible for 22 of them.

Sophomore Ryan Motter (CMC) continued his torrid hitting, going 4-for-6 with three runs, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Junior Trey Smith (CMC) went 2-for-6 with a home run and his classmate Nick DeGallier (CMC) went 4-for-6 and drove in three runs and scored two. Freshman Nate Tolles (CMC) earned his first career win after pitching 3.1 innings of relief, surrendering only one run and striking out five. Chris Blake was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Raptors with two RBI and three runs while his teammate Preston Gittelson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

The Stags opened up the game with a huge six-run rally in the bottom of the first. With Motter on base with a lead-off double, junior Chase Eller (CMC) lined a single to center field to bring in the first run. After a single from senior Evan Opperman (CMC) moved Eller to second, freshman Henri Levenson (CMC) dropped in a single to right field to double the Stags' lead. DeGallier continued the string of RBI singles as did junior Alex Clemens (CMC) and Motter in his second at-bat.

At the top of the second, Gittelson cut the lead in half with bases loaded and one out when he lined a triple to deep left center to bring in three runs.

After adding a run in the bottom of the second, CMS went on another crushing rally by posting up four runs. With runners on first and second, Motter had his third consecutive hit to bring in one run and Eller followed with another RBI single. After Opperman drove in a run off a sacrifice fly, Smith launched a solo shot over left center to make it 11-3.

CMS was not done putting on a hitting clinic, going on a seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning to surely put the game away. Sophomore Pat Shore (CMC) drove an RBI double after sophomore Jack Savard (CMC) scored on a wild pitch. After Motter reached first on an error, Eller and Opperman hit back-to-back RBI singles to pad the lead. With two outs, DeGallier crushed a two-run triple to right center and later scored on an error by the second baseman.

The Raptors scored four runs in the top of the fifth, but struggled to climb out of the hole as Tolles and junior John O'Malley (CMC) contained their offense in relief.

The Stags will resume conference play this weekend as they head to Occidental College this Friday, Mar. 24 at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader at home the following day starting at 11 a.m.
