Baughman conquers Vikings with complete game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a tough 5-0 loss against Willamette University (15-7, 9-3) on Friday night, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team (8-8, 4-2) ended its drought on Saturday afternoon with a 7-5 victory over Berry College (12-10, 3-3). Senior Sam Baughman (CMC) pitched a complete game against Berry, getting charged with three runs and striking out three batters for his fourth win of the season. His earned run average currently stands at 3.15. Sophomore Ryan Motter (CMC) played exceptionally well in the last two games, going 3-for-6 and two runs.

In the Stags' game against Willamette, Bearcats starting pitcher Brandon Nelson threw a complete game shutout and gave up only two hits for the win. The Bearcats' offense did not wake up until the fourth inning when they scored on an RBI single and an error to take a 2-0 lead. The game remained until the ninth inning when Connor Bailey sealed the victory with a three-run homerun.

The Stags defense showed up from the start of the game against Berry as juniors Alex Clemens (CMC), Chase Eller (CMC) and sophomore Nick DeGallier (CMC) combined for a double play to get out of the first inning. Baughman ran into some trouble after giving up a leadoff double to Devin Skelton. After Skelton advanced to third on a pop out to second, Kris Patel brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

The bats finally woke up from their slumber for CMS as the Stags broke out for five runs in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and third, freshman Henri Levenson (CMC) reached first off an error to bring in one run. After sophomore Jack Savard (CMC) loaded the bases again with a single, Clemens brought one run in despite hitting into a double play. Motter brought Levenson home with a short RBI single and Eller cleared the bases with a deep home run to left center to give CMS the 5-1 lead.

With two outs in the top of the third inning, Baughman ran into some trouble after surrendering an RBI triple to Alfred Francis. Francis jumped on a wild pitch from Baughman to score an extra run for the Vikings, but Baughman finally got out of the inning after forcing a groundout from Skelton.

Senior Evan Opperman (CMC) took one run back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single down the left field line to score. The Vikings took a run back in the top of the sixth, but the Stags maintained their three-run lead in the bottom of the seventh and DeGallier brought home Opperman with a sacrifice bunt.

Baughman looked like he was ready to call it a day in the eighth inning after giving up double followed by an RBI triple, but the senior kept his composure and left one runner stranded as he managed to get the next two outs. He then finished the ninth inning with ease, forcing the Vikings into three easy fly outs to end the game.
