Baughman dazzles with eight strikeouts to win 5-4

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior Sam Baughman (CMC) put on a pitching clinic against Bates College (2-3, 0-0) on Friday afternoon, striking out eight batters in five shutout innings to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team (5-3, 3-0) to a 5-4 victory. The ace unleashed his full repertoire, mixing his curveball and slider with his fastball to fool opposing batters. Freshman Emmett Covello (CMC) had two hits, including a base-clearing two-run RBI double, while freshman Kevin Nakahara (HMC) went 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.

Baughman got caught in a jam at the top of the second inning, with one out and runners on first and third. However, the ace managed to get the next batter to chase a breaking ball for a strikeout. He then followed up with well-placed fastball to retire Asher MacDonald and keep the Bobcats scoreless.

In the bottom of the third with runners on first and third base, sophomore Nick DeGallier (CMC) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field to bring in a run. Covello followed with a double to left center to clear the bases and give CMS a 3-0 lead.

The Stags seemed certain to win when they headed to the top of the ninth with a 5-1 lead, but the Bobcats still had some fight left. With runners on first and second, Ryan McCarthy singled through the left side to bring home one run. Brendon Canavan knocked in two more with an RBI single to center field, but junior John O'Malley (CMC) struckout the following batter to finish the game.

CMS will resume play on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Puget Sound for a double-header. The opening pitch will start at 11 a.m.
