Whittier takes two on senior day

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier Poets took the final two games of the three game series from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team on senior day at Arce Field.

Game one ended in seven innings at Whittier with a lopsided 13-1 score in favor of the Stags. Sophomore Trey Smith (CMC) hit for the cycle and was a perfect 5-5 with three RBI and four runs scored.

CMS put up five in the top of the first and never looked back. Junior Sam Baughman (CMC) pitched the full seven innings, allowing only one run on three hits.

Including Smith, four separate Stags hit .500 or better to produce one of the highest offensive outputs of the 2016 season.

The Poets opened up game two with a two-run home run in the first inning of play.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Whittier managed to score two more on a single to left field courtesy of Dmitri Washington.

The Stags used three senior pitchers in the first three innings on senior day, with MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) pitching the first, Clayton Brock (CMC) pitching the second and Troy Odo (CMC) pitching the third.

Whittier once again loaded the bases, leading to a sacrifice fly which put the Stags in a 5-0 hole in the third.

Sophomore Chase Eller responded with a solo home-run in the bottom of the third for the Stags' first run of the game.

A trio of RBI singles led to the Poets taking an 8-1 lead after four.

Matthew Macey drilled a three-run home run in the fifth for Whittier, leading to sophomore Daniel Enzminger (CMC) taking over on the mound.

CMS did not find any offense the rest of the way, as Whittier earned an 11-1 seven inning victory.

Nick Garcia pitched the full seven innings for Whittier and allowed one run on seven hits.

Eller was the only Stag to register an RBI thanks to his third-inning home run.

Game 2 Box Score

Whittier got on the board first in game three with an RBI single from Dylan DeBrouwer that went just beyond the diving reach of third baseman Ryan Motter (CMC) to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

A pair of back-to-back RBI shots in the third extended the Poet lead to three after three innings.

Smith made a fantastic diving grab on a shallow ball hit to left center field for the first out of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Smith tripled to center field and scored on the ensuing Nolan Anderson (CMC) groundout to make it a 3-1 game.

The Poets regained a three-run advantage on an RBI double sent to center field that featured Jake Raynaud escaping a tag from Evan Opperman (CMC) at home.

Jack Witte (CMC) hit the Stags' second triple of the game in the bottom of the fifth to the wall in right center and was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Menthen to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Anderson singled up the middle to lead off the Stags' offensive half of the sixth, and after Eller reached on a throwing error, Alex Clemens (CMC) found space in the middle of the field for an RBI single.

Whittier extended it to a four-run game in the seventh with a Tanner Marcoe RBI double and a Max Bradshaw two-run home run.

Clemens drilled his second single of the game in the eighth, followed by Witte's second triple, each scoring a run.

The ninth inning saw the Poets add three more to their run totals and hold on for a 10-5 win.

Clemens led the Stags with a 2-4, two RBI performance and Witte went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Marcoe went 3-4 featuring two RBI and three runs scored for Whittier.

CMS (9-24 overall, 7-17 SCIAC) will now transition into the final four games of the season with the SCIAC round robin starting April 27 with the opponents TBD.
