Leopards sweep Stags in doubleheader

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A pair of home losses to the University of La Verne dropped the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team to 3-8 (2-4 SCIAC) on the year. La Verne beat CMS 6-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

In game one, the Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Chase Eller (CMC) RBI single, scoring sophomore outfielder Trey Smith (CMC) who tripled earlier in the inning.

The score held up until La Verne tallied three runs in the top of the fifth and chased freshman starting pitcher Nick DeGallier (CMC). CMS earned one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when senior infielder Jack Witte (CMC) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Eller.

The score remained tight until La Verne's Christopher Ligot was walked with the bases loaded and two outs on the board in the top of the seventh to put the Stags in a 4-2 hole.

ULV strung together a pair of additional runs in the top of the eighth and the Stags were not able to answer, falling by a final score of 6-2.

Witte and Eller both had RBIs and DeGallier only allowed one earned run on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Leopards outhit the Stags 15-4 and received balanced scoring. Pitcher Brent Backlund earned his second win of the year with Anthony Braun pitching 2.2 shutout innings for the save.

Game two saw the Leopards take a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first and extend the lead to two in the third on a sacrifice fly.

CMS responded quickly when Witte singled to center field scoring Eller who previously singled and stole second to begin the bottom half of the third inning.

La Verne went on to score individual runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Relief pitcher Brett Early had strong success against the Stags' lineup. CMS wasn't able to put another run up on the board until DeGallier grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Smith. However, the Stags were not able to take full advantage of the offensive opportunity to potentially tie the game and went into the ninth down 4-2.

Leopards reliever Nick Byrd struck out a pair of batters in the final inning and Smith grounded into a fielder's choice to end the three game series against La Verne with a 4-2 loss.

Junior pitcher Sam Baughman (CMC) pitched seven innings for CMS, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Witte went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI to lead the Stags.

La Verne received a strong performance from designated hitter Christopher Arcos who turned in a 2-3 night with an RBI and a run scored.
