First innings grand slams lift Stags over Sagehens for sweep

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored 32 runs in Saturday's double header against cross-street rivals, Pomona-Pitzer for a sweep of the Sagehens on the road. The Stags won the first game 21-13 in a there hour and 20 minute epic and then won game two, 11-7 in eight innings.

CMS put up five runs in the top of the first highlighted by sophomore Trey Smith (CMC) hitting his first grand slam of the day plating Nolan Anderson (CMC), Evan Opperman (CMC) and Ryan Motter (CMC).

The teams traded punches in the middle of the game with Pomona-Pitzer taking the 9-7 lead in the sixth inning. CMS then went on to score 14 runs in the final there innings of the game for the win. In those last three innings, Jack Witte (CMC) had four RBI.

The Stags started the second game in the same fashion as the first, with Smith hitting his second grand slam of the afternoon. CMS scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings, totaling 11, just out of reach of the late inning rally by the Hens.

Motter, Witte and Smith combined went 17-for-32 on the day with 15 RBI.

This is the Stags' first sweep of Pomona-Pitzer since the 2011 season. CMS (3-5, 2-1 SCIAC) next faces La Verne (5-2, 3-0 SCIAC) on Feb. 26 and 27.
