Kingsmen beat Stags in first game of round robin play

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first game of the SCIAC round robin games, the No. 8 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team hosted the No. 1 seed, Cal Lutheran with the Kingsmen victorious 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Stags manufactured two runs in the sixth inning but Cal Lu had consistent scoring throughout and proved to be the better team.

Jacob Brady (CMC) started on the mound for the Stags and kept the game scoreless for the first two innings before the Kingsmen poured on five runs in the third. Nico Filice for CLU tacked on the final two runs of the inning with a towering homer over the left field trees.

The Stags' runs came in the sixth inning, both on two outs. Freshman first baseman Nolan Anderson (CMC) reached on an error by the shortstop to get things going for CMS. Freshmen right fielder Trey Smith (CMC) singled through the left side for the second time in the game to continue the rally. Senior designated hitter John Rizzo (CMC) dropped a double down the left field line to score Anderson and then Zachary Bern (CMC) hit an opposite field single to plate Smith.

Junior MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) got his first start at third base and made two excellent backhand plays down the line in his debut.

The Stags go to Occidental on Saturday and Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday before returning home on Tuesday, Apr. 28 for the final game of the season against Redlands at 3 p.m.
