Doubles lift Stags in sixth inning but Bates wins 15-4

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags faced Bates from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) on Tuesday afternoon and lost 15-4. Three Stags hit three doubles on the day but it was not enough to overcome the powerful Bobcats' offense that tallied 20 hits.

CMS got out of the first two innings only allowing two runs and then got on the board in the bottom of the third. Samuel O'Braitis (CMC) and Nicholas Lillie (CMC) got on with a pair of hit-by-pitches. O'Braitis scored on a one-out grounder to the right side and Michael Gose (CMC) was awarded the RBI.

The Stags scored again in the sixth inning with four hits in a row. Nolan Anderson (CMC) took over as the designated hitter and smacked a double past the first baseman down the right field line. Christian Hoxsie (CMC) nailed another double to the center field wall, scoring Anderson. Jackson Umberger (CMC) got the second RBI of the inning on a single up the middle to plate Hoxsie.

The Stags struggled to get outs from the mound. The Bates hitters put at least a run on the board in seven of the nine innings. The Bobcats stymied any rally from the Stags with a two-run shot in the top of the ninth by Nate Pajka. Pajka has now hit a homer in each of the two games Bates has played in the season.

The Stags, still in search for their first win, host La Verne on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, CMS goes to La Verne for a double header to round out the three game series.
