Late rally not enough in baseball home opener against Willamette

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team's home opener, the Stags scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to continue the rally, losing to Willamette 9-3. Freshman Nolan Anderson (CMC) led CMS with three hits, two runs scored and a run batted in.

The Bearcats first scored in the second inning, capitalizing on a Stag error and a double to right field by Cameron Igarashi. CMS punched back in the bottom of the inning when Anderson led off with an infield simgle and then stole second base. Junior Jackson Umberger (CMC) singled to center and then freshman Zachary Bern (CMC) hit Anderson in on a infield grounder resulting in a wacky play.

Willamette scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings on five hits total. The Bearcats put together a big inning in the eighth as the Stags struggled to get outs.

In the bottom half of the ninth, junior MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) got on base with a two-out walk and scored from first on a long single to right center by Anderson. The rookie scored on the next pitch on a double by classmate Trey Smith (CMC).

Unfortunately the Stags ran out of outs and innings to continue the rally, stranding Smith on base.

The Bearcats were led by Austin Hagarty, who had three hits and scored two runs. The speedy Hunter Gallant stole two bases and also scored twice.

CMS (0-2) continues the four game home series against Willamette (1-0) with a double header on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
