Kesselman near perfect in seven inning win over Caltech; CMS earns sweep

CLAREMONT, Calif. – To close out its series with Caltech and earn a three-game sweep, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team combined for 20 runs and 25 hits over the final two games on April 19 at Arce Field. CMS defeated Caltech 7-3 in the first game of the doubleheader and won the second game 13-0, in seven innings. In the second game, CMS pitcher Andor Kesselman nearly threw a perfect, seven inning game. The Stags have now won four games in a row and are 13-22 overall and 9-15 in SCIAC.

The final four regular season games for the Stags are now set. CMS hosts Cal Lutheran (April 23) and Occidental (April 29) and has road games at Redlands (April 25) and Whittier (April 27). Check the baseball schedule for the most up-to-date information.

Game 1: CMS 7, Caltech 3
The Stags didn't wait long to score in the first game as sophomore IF Mackenzie Menthen came through with an RBI double to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the third, CMS tacked on two more runs, one on a solo homer by senior IF Scott Witte and the other on a sacrifice fly by Menthen. Witte went 3-for-3 in the game and is now hitting .315 on the season with three homers.

Caltech came back with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth inning, one on a fielder's choice RBI groundout by Albie Lavin, the other coming on a passed ball.

Up 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, CMS put the game away with three runs, two of which came on a two-run double by sophomore designated hitter Jack Witte.

On the mound, sophomore Clayton Brock (3-6) pitched six innings, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run and three hits to get the win. Sophomore Samuel Woodman then pitched the final three innings to get the save.

Tim Menninger led Caltech with three hits in the game.

Game 2: CMS 13, Caltech 0 (7 Innings)
Stag starting pitcher Andor Kesselman (3-4) highlighted the afternoon with a near-perfect, seven inning outing. It wasn't until two outs in the seventh inning that Kesselman allowed anyone on base as he gave up back-to-back hits before retiring the final batter for the shutout. Kesselman struck out nine and allowed just two hits over seven innings for the Stags.

Big innings on offense for the Stags came in the first inning with five runs and the fourth inning with six runs. Senior IF Ray Hurwitz capped off the scoring in the first inning with a two-run single. Then in the fourth inning, Jack Witte had a two-run triple and senior Michael Erb had a two RBI double. Jack Witte, Erb, Hurwitz and senior Yoni Hendel each had two hits in the game for the Stags.
