CLAREMONT, Calif. – Coach Randy Town earned his 500th career win as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team beat Redlands 9-6 in the final game of the series on April 12.
As the head coach since 1988, Town is the winningest coach in CMS baseball history. Additionally, Town is in the top 40 for all-time wins in NCAA Division III baseball.
In the series against Redlands, CMS lost the first two games 10-1 and 8-0 before beating the Bulldogs 9-6 in the second game on Saturday.
In the back and forth game on Saturday afternoon, CMS rallied for the 9-6 win against Redlands, a perennial SCIAC foe. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first three innings before the Stags put up two of their own in the fourth.
Sophomore first baseman Jackson Umberger tripled to start the inning and scored on a single out to center by junior John Rizzo. Rizzo was plated by senior Yoni Hendel on a sacrifice fly out to right field.
Trailing by three in the top of the fifth, CMS capitalized on a one out walk earned by sophomore Jack Witte. Hits by sophomore Mackenzie Menthen, Umberger and Rizzo and then another Hendel sacrifice fly scored three and tied up the game at five runs apiece.
Redlands went ahead in the bottom of the fifth but CMS tied it back up with a homer by Rizzo, the 2014 SCIAC Take a Swing at Cancer Home Run Derby winner. Menthen came up big with a three run long ball in the eighth to put the Stags up 9-6, where the score remained.
Senior Andor Kesselman came into the game in the sixth and held the Bulldogs scoreless for three innings, earning the win. Senior Scott Witte pitched the ninth and captured the save.
On Friday, the Stags had an opportunity to score first when leadoff hitter Scott Witte doubled in the bottom of the first but could not convert. Witte went 3-for-5 at the plate, with three of the team's six hits.
Redlands tacked on a handful of runs early before the Stags put one up in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Samuel Woodman earned a leadoff walk and ultimately scored on sacrifice fly by junior Michael Gose.
In the first game on Saturday, Redlands' Josh Makler threw a complete game no-hitter to blank the Stags. This is the first no-hitter for a single pitcher in at least 15 years of Bulldog baseball. With the dominant performance, Makler earned his seventh win on the season.
Despite the no-hitter, CMS found their way on base seven times with five walks and a pair of Bulldog errors.
CMS is now 10-22 on the season, 6-15 in SCIAC and in eighth place. This weekend, the Stags play their final SCIAC series against Caltech, heading to Pasadena on Friday and returning home for a double header on Saturday (4/19) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
