CMS swept by Lutes

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a two game exhibition with Pacific Lutheran, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team lost both (8-1 and 14-3) on Friday and Saturday at Arce Field. Freshman Evan Opperman and Andrew Burgard had the only RBI for the Stags during the games.

Friday: PLU 8, CMS 1

Junior starter Chad Hadzinsky kept the game close during his six and two thirds innings, giving up three runs, only two of them earned. The game remained at 3-1 until the Lutes came alive in the top of the ninth and scored five runs. Five different PLU hitters doubled during the game.

CMS scored their only run off an Opperman single and sophomore Jack Witte scoring from second base on the play.

The Stags ended the top of the eighth inning on an exciting double play on a fly ball to junior Michael Gose who threw it in to catch the runner off the bag.

Saturday: PLU 14, CMS 3

In the second game of the series, the Lutes came out strong and scored three runs in the top of the second. CMS punched right back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning with back to back doubles by senior Ray Hurwitz and Burgard.

The Stags capitalized on a Lute error in the fourth inning allowing senior Yoni Hendel to reach first base safely. Burgard subsequently hit another double to score Hendel.

Unfortunately, PLU had scored six runs earlier in the inning and already held a 9-3 lead. The Lutes continued their offensive attack and tacked on at least a run in three of the five remaining innings.

Senior Scott Witte made his pitching debut on the season in the eighth inning. He struck out three and allowed just one hit.

Box Score

The Stags are now 8-18 on the year, 4-11 in SCIAC. CMS begins a three game series with Cal Lutheran this Friday playing the first game away and then returning home on Saturday, April 5 to host the Kingsmen at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
