Three RBI by Burgard and homer by Jack Witte propel Stags past ULV for one win in series

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the SCIAC series against La Verne, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team went 1-2 over the weekend. The Stags lost the Friday game 2-1, won the first of the double header on Saturday 9-7 and then lost the final game 9-6. Sophomore Andrew Burgard was 2-4 at the plate with three RBI in the Stags' win. 

Friday Game: ULV 2, CMS 1

In the first game of the series, starter Chad Hadzinsky went eight and a third innings and held the Leopards to only two runs. Unfortunately, the Stags bats could not push more than one across the plate. Senior Michael Erb had two hits on the afternoon and scored the lone run for CMS.

Saturday Game #1: CMS 9, ULV 7

The Stags started off hot with two singles in the first inning. Despite not scoring initially, CMS was seeing the ball well. Junior John Rizzo led off the top of the second with a walk and was moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt by senior Ray Hurwitz. Burgard recorded his first RBI for the day with a single to center, scoring Rizzo. Senior Scott Witte kept it going with another single as Burgard scored. Sophomore Jack Witte capped off the explosive inning with a homer over the right field fence.

La Verne punched back in the bottom of the second with one run of their own leaving CMS with a 4-1 lead.

The Leopards tied it up in the third with a triple by Pedro Espinoza, who scored on a Stag error, and then went ahead 5-4 in the fourth on Espinoza's RBI single up the middle.

S. Witte stayed hot and singled to lead off the fifth inning. The Stags tied up the game again as S. Witte scored on sophomore Mackenzie Menthen's single through the right side of the infield.

The CMS bats came alive again in the top of the eighth. The Stags scored four runs on just three hits while taking advantage of two errors by the Leopards. In the inning Burgard had two RBI on a single to right field.

CMS held onto their lead even though La Verne threatened in the bottom of the eighth with one run. The Stags ultimate won 9-7. Sophomore Samuel Woodman came in in relief and got the win. Senior Andor Kesselman held the Leopards to just one hit in the bottom of the eighth and ninth to earn the save.

Saturday Game #2: ULV 9, CMS 6

In the second game of the double header, the Stags matched the Leopards with ten hits but La Verne's were timelier.

CMS scattered hits throughout their lineup with seven of the nine Stag hitters getting on with at least a base hit. Menthen hit two doubles and batted in two runs.

Despite scoring six runs, the Stags were unable to get on top at the end and lost 9-6.

After the series the Stags are 6-15 on the year, 4-11 in conference. CMS travels to Tucson, AZ this week to play Carleton, Carthage and Middlebury (3/21-22).
