Ithaca knocks off CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team lost to non-conference opponent Ithaca College 6-2 in a mid-week game at Arce Field. Freshman Sam Baughman got his first collegiate start and struck out one. The Stags are now 5-13 overall

The Ithaca College Bombers traveled out to California to play six of the nine SCIAC schools.

The Bombers got off to a quick start, scoring easily in the top of the first from a big hit by Tim Henry followed by a pair of singles to drive him in.

After the Bombers' initial success, Baughman settled in and threw two-three up, three down innings. His offense had a runner, sophomore Samuel Woodman, in scoring position in the bottom of the second but could not put a run on the board.

Ithaca knocked in two more in the top of the fourth with a walk and three hits to give them a 3-0 lead.

The Stags got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth with a single by junior Christian Hoxsie and a solidly hit grounder by sophomore Alan Toscano. Sophomore Jack Witte, who leads the team in batting average, drove a ball deep into the right center gap for a triple, scoring Toscano and putting CMS on the board.

Junior John Rizzo came in in relief in the fifth inning and pitched three strong innings He kept Ithaca to just one run while allowing five hits.

The Bombers hitting came alive in the second half of the game and scored three more to make it 6-1. They totaled 13 hits for the afternoon.

J. Witte for CMS scored the second run on a Bomber balk in the bottom of the eight inning. Despite trying to make things happen with pinch runners late in the game, the Stags were unable to pull off a win.

The Stags continue with SCIAC play in a single game on Friday (3/14) at home to start a three game series with La Verne finishing up with a double header away on Saturday (3/15) at 11 am and 2 pm.
