Big third inning leads to the Stags’ win and a split in the four game series vs. Willamette

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team beat Willamette University 11-6 in the final game of the four game series.  Willamette scored first but the Stags' bats came alive as they scored in three different innings to garner their second win on the season.

Junior Christian Hoxsie hit a one out double in the bottom of the third inning to get CMS started.  The Willamette pitcher got another out and then walked four consecutive Stags to give CMS the 2-0 lead. The bases were loaded for junior John Rizzo, who had hit two home runs in the first game of the series.  Rizzo hit a two RBI shot down the left field line and then senior Ray Hurwitz hit in two more but was thrown out at second base trying to advance on a throw.

CMS piled on three more runs in the bottom of the third when senior Scott Witte hit a two RBI single up the middle followed by a sac fly from Rizzo scoring sophomore Jack Witte.

The Stags tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth with singles by Hoxsie, sophomore Samuel Woodman and freshman Evan Opperman and Woodman scoring on a wild pitch.

Senior Chad Hadzinsky pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up only one earned run. Senior Andor Kesselman finished up the last 3+ innings and secured the game with a save.

The Wittes turned a double play in the top of the ninth to help get the Stags out of a jam.

For Willamette, Blake Lapire was 3-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Brad Breier and Andrew Wilson both hit doubles.

The Stags are off to a 2-3 start after a split in the four game series with Willamette, who came from the competitive Northwest Conference. CMS begins SCIAC play with a three game series against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.  The Stags host the Sagehens on Friday at 2:30 pm and then play a double header across the street on Saturday.
