Pitching Helps Stags To Doubleheader Split

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team was able to split its doubleheader on Saturday at Arce Field. The Stags lost the first game to the Pacific University Boxers 5-0, but responded with a victory in the second game 7-0.

Game 1: Pacific University 5, CMS 0

Freshman RHP Clayton Brock started the first game of the series throwing 5 2/3 perfect innings. The pitching duel between Brock and the Boxers' Rob Dittrick continued until the top of the seventh when Pacific was able to draw first blood with a triple that eventually scored on a catcher's interference call.

The Stags outhit the Boxers, but could not capitalize on their seven hits throughout the game. Dustin Green led the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double. Pacific added four insurance runs in the eighth.

Brock finished the game going 7 1/3 innings and striking out six.

Game 2: CMS 7, Pacific University 0

Behind the pitching of junior Andor Kesselman and bat of senior Brett Watanabe, the Stags were able to take an early lead and never looked back. In the bottom of the first Watanabe drove in Scott Witte, who led off the inning with a double, giving the Stags a 1-0 lead. That would be enough for Kesselman who would throw a complete game, three hit shutout.

CMS added three more runs in the fifth, two of which came when, with the bases loaded, Watanabe's single scored Jack Witte and Brian Bartlett. Watanabe finished the day going 3-for-5 with six RBI, his second six RBI performance of the season.

Kesselman would get out of consecutive jams in the sixth and seventh innings, which included striking out four Boxer's in the top of the sixth. He finished the day with twelve strikeouts.
