Gomez Leads CMS To Doubleheader Split With Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior pitcher Austin Gomez allowed just two hits and one run over seven innings of work as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team defeated Whittier College 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Arce Field in the first game of the doubleheader. Whittier then defeated CMS 8-0 in the afternoon's second game. CMS is now 2-8 on the season while Whittier is 7-4.

Game 1: CMS 6, Whittier 2
In the bottom of the second, CMS took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by senior infielder Dustin Green. Whittier capitalized on an error and tied the game up in the top of the fourth at 1-1.

A four-run bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as CMS jumped ahead 5-1. Senior catcher Sam Katz had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double down the right field line. Junior infielder Ray Hurwitz and senior outfielder Brian Bartlett added RBI hits as well in the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, CMS added its final run with a sacrifice fly to right by senior outfielder William Knowles to extend the Stags' lead to 6-1.

Whittier got a run back in the top of the ninth on a homer by Max Bradshaw, but junior Scott Witte closed out the win on the mound for the Stags. Gomez (1-2) allowed just two hits and one unearned run over seven innings of work on the mound for the Stags to get the win.

Game 2: Whittier 8, CMS 0
Whittier scored all eight of its runs over four of the first five innings as they shut out CMS. The big inning for Whittier came in the top of the fifth inning as the team scored four runs off CMS freshman starting pitcher Clayton Brock (0-2).

Whittier had three players with two RBI in the game. CMS was led by Knowles at the plate who went 3-for-4. Green and freshman Samuel Woodman each had two hits for the Stags.

The Stags' bullpen pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief and allowed just one run as sophomore pitcher Andrew Levihn-Coon and junior pitcher Brett Watanabe each saw some work.
