Stags Roughed Up by Mustangs

CLAREMONT, CA – CMS baseball dropped their home opener Wednesday, falling behind early and not managing enough late, losing to The Master's College 17-5. The Stags stand at 0-2 on the year, but open conference play this weekend with a clean slate.

The Stags answered a second inning tally by the Mustangs with their own in the bottom half, but a five run third put Master's in control and they didn't look back. They scored five more in the sixth, one in the seventh, and a crushing five more in the ninth, after the Stags had cut the lead to 10-5 with a four run seventh of their own.

The Stags managed just four hits despite hitting the ball hard all afternoon, but their patience (five BBs) helped produce runs. Jason Rehhaut, Brett Watanabe, and Dustin Green all walked and also scored a run.

Outfielder Chris Talley put together a tremendous day for the Mustangs in the win, notching four base hits, including a double and a homer. He scored four times and knocked in three more Mustang runs.

Daniel Sheaffer (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the season. Kyle Shipley (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Stags.

CMS (0-2, 0-0 SCIAC) opens up SCIAC action at Cal Lutheran (2-0, 0-0 SCIAC) Friday before returning home to Arce Field to take on the Kingsmen in a doubleheader this Saturday.  First pitch of game one will be at 11:00 am and can be heard live at CMSAthletics.org.
