Christina Campbell - Swimming & Diving

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The CMS women's swimming and diving team took Division I California Baptist right down to the final relay at the annual distance meet between the programs, and junior Christina Campbell was a big part of the reason why, setting the tone by swimming a strong first leg of the opening medley relay and then capturing an individual win in the backstroke.

In the longer-than-usual 500-yard medley relay, Campbell staked the Athena team to a three-second lead, before it finished off a win by just under a five-second margin. She also captured an individual win in the 300-yard backstroke, picking up nine more points for the CMS total by capturing the race by a margin of almost five seconds, touching the wall in 3:20.77, well ahead of the second-place swimmer at 3:25.53, She then added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle as well, giving her 13 individual points and 11 with the relay.

Her efforts gave the Athenas a chance to win the meet on the final freestyle relay, before the Lancers, who are in their first season competing in the Division I Western Athletic Conference, were able to pick up a narrow 128-115 victory.

On Saturday, Campbell added two more individual wins in events that she doesn't typically compete in, as the Athenas improved to 5-0 in SCIAC with a dominant win over La Verne. She swam in the 200-yard butterfly and came in first place with a time of 2:14.02, and then added a win in the 500-yard freestyle as well, giving her three individual wins and a relay win over the weekend.

The No. 11-ranked Athenas will be back in action at home at Axelrood Pool this weekend for another SCIAC meet, taking on Redlands, with diving getting underway at 10 a.m., following by swimming at 11 a.m.
