Marco Conati - Men's Swimming and Diving

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Marco Conati had a big weekend to lead the way for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team, which came in second at the SCIAC Championships. Conati won two individual championships in two different strokes, winning the 50-yard freestyle sprint and then capturing the 100-yard butterfly in one of the top 10 Division III times this season.

Conati earned his first win on Friday in the 50 free, winning by a razor-thin margin in the quick down-and-back event. He finished in 20.69 seconds, good for a margin of eight-hundredths of a second over Lukas Menkhoff of Pomona-Pitzer and nine-hundredths of a second over Aaron Bauer of Redlands.

On Saturday, he picked up a more dominant win in the 100-yard butterfly. He was the only swimmer in the field to finish in less than 50 seconds in the prelims (48.81) and he trimmed even more off his time in the finals, touching the wall in 48.39 for a margin of victory of .62 over Ryan Drover of Pomona-Pitzer.

The 48.39 in the 100 fly puts him a tie for seventh place nationally this season, and will likely result in a trip to Greensboro, N.C. next month for the NCAA Division III Championships. A similar placing there would earn him a spot in the finals and first-team All-America honors (given to the top eight).
