Joshua Sealand and Carmen Mejia – Track and Field

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Following a successful showing at the SCIAC Championship, seniors Joshua Sealand (HMC) and Carmen Mejia (SC) earned CMS Athlete of the Week for their contributions to their programs’ major victory at the conference meet.

Sealand demonstrated unrelenting stamina and a will to win on Saturday, taking first in the 800-meter with a time of 1:49.90. Later in the day, he led the Stags to a sweep in the 1500, as he took first at 3:54.61. Originally not supposed to run the 5000, Sealand stepped to increase the Stags’ chance at securing points at the meet after learning that the Stags were a spot behind first place. Sealand managed to finish in third despite the fatigue with a time of 15:04.19.

Like Sealand, Mejia ran in three events on the same day to give the Athenas a huge lead on the scoresheet. The senior first raced in the 400, taking the silver with a time of 57.42 seconds. Mejia then got back on the horse just 30 minutes later and raced her way to a top finish in the 800 at 2:12.86. She closed the evening by running the third leg of the 4x400 relay alongside senior Liz Lee (HMC), sophomore Genova Ecola (HMC), and junior Tyra Abraham (SC). She helped her team take first place as they crossed at 3:58.83.
