Jonathan Shaw & Emma Kang - Golf

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After helping the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps golf programs win the SCIAC Championship and winning the individual titles, both junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) and freshman Emma Kang (CMC) are named CMS Co-Athlete of the Week.

Shaw concluded his SCIAC Championship run by sharing the individual title with Nate Gray from Cal Lutheran University. Gray had 69 strokes in the final round, 213 overall, before taking on the No. 18 hole (Par-5, 592 yards), while Shaw held a one-stroke lead over Gray in the round and overall scoring. After landing his ball on the green in two strokes, Gray landed an incredible eagle-putt to take the lead. However, following three strokes to the green, Shaw matched Gray with a birdie putt from distance to tie for first place. Shaw finished the tournament shooting 73, 71, and 72 for an overall score of 216.

On the final day of the tournament, Kang put together her highest front nine of the tournament at 4-over including a double bogey on the ninth, but something clicked at the turn and she delivered a 32 on the final nine holes for an even par performance. She improved each day of the tournament shooting 75, 74 and 72 for an overall score of 221, three strokes fewer than the second place finisher.

Kang and the Athenas will head to Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas on May 9-12. Shaw will lead the men’s team to the National Championship on May 16-19 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
