Avinash Vemuri – Men’s Tennis

(3/7 – 3/13) – The Stags went 3-1 during the week with wins over No. 7 Carnegie Mellon (6-3) on March 9, No. 26 Texas-Tyler (7-2) on March 11, and No. 5 Trinity (6-3) on March 12. In three matches played (all during the Stag-Hen Invite), freshman Avinash Vemuri (CMC) went 3-0 in singles play and was the only Stag during the week that did not have a loss (combined singles/doubles record). Two of Vemuri’s wins during the week came in straight sets. Against Texas-Tyler he defeated Jack Puckey 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round of the Stag-Hen Invite. Then in the semifinals against Trinity he won 6-2, 6-4. He then stayed perfect in tournament play in the Stags loss against top-ranked Emory. He won at No. 6 singles in straight sets. Vemuri was one of two Stags to earn points against Emory, pulling out a dramatic match tie-break win after saving three-consecutive match points on his serve at 1-6, 4-5, love-forty.
