CMS Athletics announces Hall of Fame Class of 2014
CLAREMONT, Calif. – A group of five Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletic greats have been selected as inductees into the CMS Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2014, Michael Sutton ’76, Director of Athletics, William B. Arce Professor and George R. Roberts Fellow has announced.
The 2014 class includes four Claremont McKenna College graduates (Mike Dawe ’89 – Men’s Basketball; Amy Cleveland ’95 – Women’s Basketball; Quang Leba ’97 – Men’s Track/Water Polo; Margaret Wang Rattay ’97 – Women’s Swimming/Water Polo) and one inductee from Harvey Mudd College (Tony Gnecco ’89 – Men’s Track & Field).
Accolades for the Class of 2014 include NCAA qualifiers, All-Americans, SCIAC champions and much more. The five CMS alumni will officially be inducted at the department’s annual Hall of Fame Banquet which is scheduled to be held at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Claremont McKenna College’s campus on Saturday, Nov. 8.
“The Hall of Fame Class of 2014 continues CMS’ tradition of recognizing great alumni who were so impactful on their respective teams and the experiences of their teammates,” said Sutton. “I am so pleased that we will be able to celebrate their careers at the Hall of Fame celebration in November. This event brings back so many great alumni and memories of their achievements. It is truly a ‘feel good’ event, one that will be here before we know it!”
Inductees are in alphabetical order by last name
Mike Dawe ’89 (CMC-Men’s Basketball): As a member of a two-time SCIAC championship men’s basketball team during his four years on the squad (1985-89), Dawe was a three-time All-SCIAC selection, team captain and team MVP as a senior in 1989 and an All-Region selection as a junior. Both seasons that the Stags won the SCIAC championship, the team also advanced to NCAA postseason play. During his junior and senior years he was named first team All-Conference after earning second team All-Conference as a sophomore. Dawe held the men’s basketball team’s all-time record for career games played (104) upon graduation (he is currently fourth). He is currently fourth in career rebounds (737), sixth in career points (1,389) and field goals made (535), seventh in free throws made (309), eight in free throw percentage (.794) and ninth in field goal percentage (.547). As a sophomore in 1986, Dawe went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line, a CMS single game free-throw percentage record.
Amy Cleveland ’95 (CMC-Women’s Basketball): A four-time All-SCIAC selection from 1991-1995, Cleveland became the first CMS 
women’s basketball player to be named first team All-SCIAC three times in her career. During her career she established just about every offensive record kept by CMS, and as a senior in 1995, she tied or broke 17 school records. She held the single-game record for points in a game with 38 upon graduation and still holds the career record for points (1,649). She is second in career free-throws made (294), third in field goals made (634), fourth in games played (103), sixth in three-point field goals (87), ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.357) and tenth in free-throw percentage (.748). She also holds single-season records in points (525) and for points per game (22.0) and field goals made (99) during SCIAC play. As a senior in 1995, Cleveland went a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line, a CMS single game free-throw percentage record.
Tony Gnecco ’89 (HMC-Men’sTrack & Field): The anchor on a 4x400 relay team that qualified for the NCAA Championships in three of his four seasons, Gnecco was named HMC’s Athlete of the Year as a junior. He was a two-time SCIAC champion (4x400 – 88, 400 – 89) and a two-time All-American (4x400 – 2nd:88, 8th-99). The 4x400 time from the team’s second place finish at the NCAA Championships in 1988 still holds the CMS record at 3:12.60. In 1986, he set a freshmen record in the 400. He is still fourth all-time in the 400 (48.46) and the 4x400 teams he anchored are 1st, 6th and 7th (and were 1st, 2nd and 3rd upon graduation). Outside of his athletic endeavors, Gnecco was very involved on campus, writing for HMC’s student newspaper and serving as dorm president.
Quang Leba ’97 (CMC-Men’s Track/Water Polo): A national champion and two-time All-American in the javelin, Leba was part of a SCIAC championship winning track & field team in each of his four seasons at CMS. In 1997, (the year he won the national championship) he was named the SCIAC and West Region Athlete of the Year. He was a three-time SCIAC champion (1996-javelin, 1997-110 high hurdles and javelin). In 1997 at the California/Nevada Track Meet which included athletes from each of the NCAA’s divisions, he finished in third place in the javelin. In addition to being a track & field athlete, Leba spent the fall season in the pool as a contributor for the Stags water polo team which won three SCIAC championships in his four seasons.
Margaret Wang Rattay ’97 (CMC-Women’s Swimming and Water Polo): In four seasons as a swimmer, she was a six-time SCIAC champion. As a sophomore in 1995, she won the SCIAC title in the 100-yard breaststroke and in 1996 she won the 100 breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle. Then as a senior in 1997, she capped off her career with SCIAC titles in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. For her efforts as a senior, she was named CMC Female Athlete of the Year, SCIAC Swimmer of the Year and she was selected as an All-American. During her final season, she also set six school records and one SCIAC record at the time. In addition to swimming, she was a two-year member of the water polo team.
