Bio

Kivela was one of the toughest competitors ever at CMS. She earned All-America honors three times, twice in cross country and once in track. She is one of only 10 women at the time to earn first-team All-SCIAC honors in cross country four times. She is also one of only eight women at the time to earn first-team All-West Region honors in cross country four times. Kivela helped lead the Athenas to SCIAC cross country titles in 1984, 1987, and 1988. She earned All-America honors both times she competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships as she helped the team to a seventh-place finish in 1984 and a 10th-place finish in 1987. In track, she earned SCIAC titles in the 5,000 meters in 1986 and 1988. She capped off her CMS running career by finishing fifth in the 3,000 meters at the 1988 NCAA Track & Field Championships. Kivela was the cross country team captain in 1985, 1986, and 1987, and the track & field team captain in 1988.
