NCAA showing by MWP keeps CMS in top-10 in second fall Directors’ Cup standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team made its first-ever appearance in the National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship in 2015 and placed fifth. The fifth place finish by the Stags earned CMS 25 points for the 2015-16 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings and helped CMS stay in the top-10 nationally. CMS ranked ninth in the second set of fall rankings, which were released on Dec. 10. CMS remains the highest ranked West Region program. CMS totaled 210 total points in the latest rankings.

The Directors' Cup competition is now in its 21st year. The competition awards points to each athletic department based on its teams’ finishes at the NCAA Championships.

The first fall rankings were released on Nov. 24 and included championship results from men's cross country, women's cross country, women’s volleyball and women’s field hockey. CMS totaled 185 points and ranked sixth in the first fall rankings with women’s cross country (63), men’s cross country (72) and volleyball (50) all placing at their respective NCAA Championships. The men's cross country team finished 7th (its highest finish ever) while the women's cross country team finished 13th and the volleyball team placed 17th.

CMS has been the top finishing SCIAC representative in 15 of the first 20 years of the Directors’ Cup and also finished in the top-60 overall 18 times. The 2014-15 school year was the 12th top-30 finish for the program as CMS finished tied for a program-best 11th place finish.

The final fall standings are scheduled to be released on Dec. 24 and will include results from women’s cross country, men’s cross country, women’s field hockey, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s water polo and football.

The final standings of the 2015-16 school year are scheduled to be released on June 9, 2016.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports in Division III-- nine women’s and nine men’s.
