XC and VBALL success puts CMS in Directors’ Cup top-10 in first fall rankings
WESTLAKE, Ohio – Behind the strength of outstanding
seasons from its cross country and volleyball teams,
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics is ranked sixth nationally out of
400-plus NCAA Division III athletic departments in the first of
three fall releases of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup
standings. CMS is the highest ranked program from the West Region.
It is the first time that CMS has been ranked this high in the
initial fall standings.
The Directors' Cup competition is now in its 20th year. The
competition awards points to each athletic department based on its
teams’ finishes at the NCAA Championships.
The first rankings which were released on Nov. 26, included
championship results from cross country, women’s volleyball
and women’s field hockey. CMS totaled 200.50 points with
women’s cross country (67.5), men’s cross country (60)
and volleyball (73) all placing at their respective NCAA
Championships. The CMS volleyball team earned a fifth place finish
nationally by making it to the first NCAA Quarterfinals in CMS
volleyball history. The women’s cross country team placed
10th at the NCAA Championships while the men’s
cross country team finished in 15th place.
CMS has been the top finishing SCIAC representative in 14 of the
first 19 years of the Directors’ Cup and also finished in the
top-60 overall 17 times. The 2013-14 school year was the 11th
top-30 finish for the program as CMS finished tied for a
program-best 13th place finish.
The final fall standings are scheduled to be released on Dec. 24
and will include results from men’s soccer, women’s
soccer and football, in addition to women’s and men’s
cross country, women’s volleyball and women’s field
hockey.
The final standings of the 2014-15 school year are scheduled to
be released on June 4, 2015.
