CMS Athletics to honor Ted Ducey and Ducey Family prior to games on Feb. 19 and 20
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Before the doors to Ducey Gymnasium
close for good, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics plans to honor the
late Ted Ducey along with the Ducey Family prior to the final
regular season basketball games in the gym on Wednesday, Feb. 19
(men’s basketball) and Thursday, Feb. 20 (women’s
basketball).
A pregame ceremony to honor Coach Ducey for his many contributions
to CMS Athletics is scheduled to take place before the 7:30 p.m.
tipoff on each night. CMS is hosting the University of Redlands for
its final regular season games in the gym, a fitting opponent for
the final regular season games at Ducey Gym since the men’s
head basketball coach at Redlands is Jim Ducey, son of Ted
Ducey.
“Ted Ducey had a huge impact on the development of our
program and to have Jim here to celebrate that last men’s
regular season home event is very fitting,” said Michael
Sutton ’76, CMS Director of Athletics, William B. Arce
Professor and George R. Roberts Fellow.
Ted Ducey coached the Stag men’s basketball and men’s
tennis programs and also served as one of the founding members of
the athletic department on campus as a physical educator. Ducey led
the Stags to 186 wins on the tennis court and 181 wins on the
hardwood from 1959 until his passing in 1974. Later in 1974,
Claremont McKenna College’s gym was named ‘Ducey
Gymnasium’ in honor of the long-time coach.
Since 1957, Ducey Gym has been home to three sports (volleyball,
men’s basketball, women’s basketball), 900-plus wins by
the Stags and Athenas, 700-plus student-athletes and 24 SCIAC
Championships.
While the games on the 19th and 20th are the
last men’s and women’s regular season games at Ducey
Gym, there is the possibility of CMS hosting a SCIAC or NCAA
Tournament game. Please check back on our website at a later date
for information on additional games. Information will be posted as
it becomes available.
