Athenas and Stags Gear Up For SCIAC Postseason Play

With several Claremont-Mudd-Scripps spring sports teams participating in SCIAC postseason tournaments and championships this weekend and next, here is a breakdown of each sport.

Women’s Golf (April 27-29 – at Oak Valley Golf Course)
The fifth-ranked Athenas are in search of the team’s second-straight SCIAC championship at the 2013 SCIAC Women’s Golf Championships which run from April 27-29 at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif. The Athenas have finished in first place in three of five tournaments this spring and also have a dual match win. At the two SCIAC tournaments during the regular season, the Athenas won both by an average of 40 strokes. Junior Maya Reddy has been the Athenas top finisher in three events this spring including wins at both SCIAC tournaments. At the second SCIAC tournament, sophomore Tiffany Su finished tied for first with Reddy.

Men’s Golf (April 27-29 – at Oak Valley Golf Course)
The No. 17 Stags kick off the three-day SCIAC Men’s Golf Championships on Saturday at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif. in search of the team’s first SCIAC championship since 1995 and a return trip to the NCAA Championships. Last spring, CMS finished fourth at the SCIAC Championships behind La Verne, Cal Lutheran and Redlands and then went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships. At the previous two SCIAC tournaments in 2013, CMS finished third and first, respectively. In the first SCIAC tournament, La Verne and Redlands finished ahead of CMS. Junior Bradley Shigezawa won both SCIAC tournaments this spring.

Women’s Lacrosse (April 24 – SCIAC Quarterfinals at Pomona-Pitzer)
The Athenas closed out the regular season with a 7-6 comeback win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, April 17, to secure the conference’s No. 5 seed and earn a rematch at Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinals of the SCIAC Championships on Wednesday, April 24. CMS ended the regular season with an 8-9 record overall and 4-6 in SCIAC play. Redlands finished the regular season atop the standing at 9-1 in SCIAC play while Pomona-Pitzer came in at fourth with a 5-5 conference record. The Athenas are led by senior midfielder Madi Shove (60 goals, 12 assists), freshman midfielder Izzy Laterzo (28 goals, 7 assists) and freshman goalie Sara Ginsburg (84 saves).

Softball (April 26-27 – at Redlands)
The Athenas closed out the regular season with nine wins in their last 10 games to finish at 29-11 overall and earn the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a 21-7 conference record. CMS faces Chapman in its first game of the tournament on Friday, April 26 at 11:30 a.m. at Redlands. CMS is 4-0 this season against SCIAC-newcomer Chapman. The Athenas are 9-3 this season against the SCIAC Tournament field (No. 1 Redlands, No. 3 Chapman, No. 4 La Verne). The Athenas are led by sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz (22-3, 1.52 ERA) and senior infielder Harmony Palmer (.487, 30 RBI, 15 2B). Women’s Tennis (May 3-4 – hosted by La Verne)
With a 25-0 regular season record and an 8-0 mark in SCIAC matches, the second-ranked Athenas wrapped up the team’s third-straight SCIAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the SCIAC Championships which run May 3-4. The Athenas are led by senior Kristin Lim who is unbeaten in singles in 2013 and is the top-ranked singles player in the West Region and she is also ranked second in doubles. Jessica Ly of Redlands, Andrea Madrigal and Maegan Zamilpa are the three other SCIAC singles players ranked in the top-10 regionally. The doubles team of junior Crystal Lim and freshman Caroline Ward is currently ranked seventh in the West Region. The doubles team of Jessica Ly and Ceara Sumida of Redlands hold the top spot in the West Region in the current rankings.

Men’s Tennis (May 3-4 – at Whittier)
The top-ranked Stags enter the SCIAC Championships at Whittier as the SCIAC regular season champion – their eighth in a row - with a 7-0 record in SCIAC dual matches and a 23-3 record overall. Sophomores Warren Wood (No. 2) and Joe Dorn (No. 7) each enter the SCIAC Championships ranked in the top-10 regionally. Cal Lutheran is the only other SCIAC team to have a singles player ranked in the top-10 regionally. Wood and Dorn are also the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the West Region.

Track & Field (April 26-27 – at Occidental hosted by Cal Lutheran)
The Stags finished 7-0 in dual meet competition and are the favorites on the men’s side. Their biggest challenge will come from La Verne, 6-1 in dual meets, and Redlands, the defending champions.  The Athenas finished 7-1 in dual meets with their lone loss coming to La Verne. The Athenas will attempt to gain a share of the SCIAC title by winning the championship meet as they have done in each of the last two seasons. Five athletes are defending champions in events they will contest this year. The five defending athletes include senior Bennett Naden in the 1500 meters, senior Rafer Dannenhauer in the 5000 meters and senior Chris Gage in the hammer throw for the men and senior Rose Lewis in the 100 hurdles and junior Ellyn Erving in the long and triple jumps for the women. Women’s Water Polo (April 26-28 – at Pasadena City College hosted by Caltech)
The women’s water polo team closed out the regular season with a 7-1 SCIAC record to wrap the No. 1 seed for the SCIAC Championships which run April 26-28 at Pasadena City College. As the No. 1 seed, the Athenas open up play in the SCIAC Championships at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 26 against the winner of the La Verne vs. Caltech match.
