Athletics Director Update and Newsletter (Winter/Spring 2016-17)

Terrance Tumey

Greetings CMS Athletics Community,

Earlier this month (April 3-9), the NCAA and its member institutions celebrated Division III Week across the country to promote D-III sports, and its dedicated student-athletes and coaches. This year, Stags and Athenas led by CMS’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) joined in for the week-long Division III celebration, and created five short videos that showcased just a few of the many stories about why individuals choose DIII and CMS.

A well-balanced Division III experience is instrumental in the growth of CMS student-athletes during their time here in Claremont. Success in the classroom and community is every bit as important as the result on the scoreboard. Each year, the Athenas and Stags exemplify what it means to be a Division III student-athlete and there have been many prime examples over the course of the winter and spring seasons, which are detailed in the CMS Winter-Spring Newsletter. Here are just a few highlights:

  • The combined GPA during the first semester for CMS student-athletes was 10.08 overall (9.86 men; 10.31 women).
  • In March, CMS hosted its inaugural Health and Wellness Fair to benefit the community.
  • CMS teams have continued to excel in competition, as evidenced by all four CMS winter sports teams finishing in the top-25 nationally, and the successes of our spring teams so far. CMS is currently ranked in the top-20 (16th) nationally in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.
  • Athena Softball has been selected as the cover story for the NCAA’s spring issue of Champion Magazine for the team’s commitment to volunteering at Mountain View Elementary School in Claremont.
  • Women’s water polo raised more than $2,500 for cancer research by hosting a Swim Across America event, and men’s soccer raised $5,000 for cancer research by participating in the 2017 Cycle for Survival.
  • In January, three student-athletes and two administrators represented CMS at the APPLE Conference, an NCAA-sponsored conference dedicated to training student-athletes and administrators on substance abuse prevention and health promotion.

During conversations I’ve had with members of the CMS Athletics community, many individuals have stressed the importance of providing a well-rounded student experience. I have appreciated hearing your perspective, and can ensure you that CMS will continue to make that goal a priority.

On a parting note, I would like to thank Keri Sanchez for her 13 years of valued service to CMS as head women’s soccer coach, and wish her success as she moves on to be an assistant coach at the University of Texas. Also I would like to thank CMS’ student-athletes, coaches, and staff for your dedication and many outstanding accomplishments this winter and spring.

Alumni, parents, and fans, thank you for your steadfast support. I look forward to seeing you in Claremont cheering on the Athenas and Stags.

Go CMS!

Sincerely,
