Sweep of Cal Lu Claims 20th SCIAC Title for Athenas

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team completed a 9-0 sweep of the Cal Lutheran Regals on Saturday morning to clinch the 20th SCIAC Championship in program history. CMS dropped just eight games in doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Jessie Cruz (CMC) and Madison Shea (CMC) each claimed 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles play to highlight six victories in singles play for CMS.

Athenas Overcome Early Deficit, Run Away from Bulldogs

With 13:22 remaining in the first-half on Saturday night, the Athenas trailed the Redlands Bulldogs 4-2 and faced a two-goal deficit for the first time against a Division III opponent this season. Four-straight CMS goals ended the period and the Athenas took a 6-4 lead into the half. The Athenas separated themselves from the Bulldogs with a 10-3 scoring margin in the second-half to claim the 16-7 victory and lock up at least a share of their fourth SCIAC Championship in program history.

Stags Dominate Distance Events

April 14, 2018

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team picked up two wins on Saturday after winning two of three duals at the SCIAC Multi Dual meet hosted at CMS. The Stags defeated Pomona-Pitzer 90.0-73.0 and Caltech 155.0-5.0, but fell to Redlands 84.50-78.50. The Stags dominated in distance events. Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) won both the 5000 meter (5:23.79) and the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:37.62). The Stags took three of the top four spots in the 3000 meter steeplechase to earn crucial points against Pomona-Pitzer.

4x100 Meter Relay Breaks Record for Second Week in a Row

The Athenas of No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field made history – again. The 4x100 meter relay team of Sabrine Griffith (CMC), Grace Pratt (CMC), Nirel JonesMitchell (CMC), and Tyra Abraham (SC) broke the CMS and SCIAC record for the second week in a row with a time of 46.70 to highlight the SCIAC Multi Dual meet hosted by CMS on Saturday. The Athenas came away with three wins, defeating Redlands 99.50-62.50, Pomona-Pitzer 122.50-39.50, and Caltech 149.0-12.0. By defeating every opponent this season, the Athenas have completed four-straight undefeated SCIAC seasons.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team stayed hot with a pair of victories on Saturday including a 9-0 sweep of Cal Lutheran and an 8-1 victory over Hope International University. The victory over Cal Lutheran clinches the Stags at least a share of the SCIAC Championship, their 26th in program history. CMS is now 6-0 in conference play and 24-3 overall.

Chapman Takes Two From Stags to Sweep Weekend Series

The Chapman Panthers beat the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team by scores of 7-1 and 15-4 on Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Stags over the weekend. The Stags struggled to get the offense going throughout the first eight innings of the day, finally breaking through for a run in the ninth inning of Game One. In Game Two, CMS and Chapman were tied 3-3 after three innings of play, but the Panthers outscored the Stags 12-1 in the final six frames to earn a 15-4 victory.

Solid Pitching and Timely Hitting Power Athenas Past Oxy in Twin Bill Sweep

The Athenas continued their winning ways, taking the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with Occidental College by a score of 6-1. Scoreless through the first three innings, the CMS offense busted open in the fourth and fifth to put six on the board. Anna Gurr (CMC) threw the ball well, shutting out the Tigers through her six innings in the circle. Occidental managed to scratch a run across in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Megan Perron (CMC), but the CMS offense had already done its damage to secure the win. Chloe Amarilla (CMC) continued what had Gurr started, holding the Tigers to one run on three hits in Game Two. She also did her part at the plate, leading the Athenas with three hits in the second half of the twin bill. Six Athenas recorded multiple hits in the game, and Jessica Fox (CMC) knocked in a team-leading three runs.

Athenas Take Down Redlands on Senior Day

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s water polo team celebrated their seniors on Saturday prior to their final home game of the season. Following the festivities, the Athenas used a big four-goal first quarter to push them past the visiting Redlands Bulldogs in a 10-7 victory. Jessica Gaffney (CMC) led the Athenas offensively with three goals and fellow senior Roxy Kiessling (CMC) had two.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team gave Anna Gurr (CMC) seven early runs of support and allowed the senior pitcher to toss six-scoreless innings en route to a 7-0 victory over the Chapman Panthers in Game One of a doubleheader on Athena Field. Carly Roleder (CMC) and Maddie Valdez (CMC) each drove home two runs in the game and collected two hits apiece. Reeve Grobecker (CMC) also notched two hits in Game One and scored a pair of runs from the leadoff spot.

Stags Held Scoreless in Series Opener at Chapman

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team was held to three hits in an 8-0 loss against the Chapman Panthers on Friday afternoon. The Stags collected two hits in the top of the first with Ryan Motter (CMC) and CJ Novogradac (CMC) both singling. Those knocks combined with a walk to Chase Eller (CMC) loaded the bases, but CMS was unable to plate a run as a strike out left the bases loaded.

Stags Control Sixth Street, Sweep Sagehens

In a Sixth Street rivalry match, the No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team blanked the No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 9-0 on Thursday night at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags turned in their most dominant doubles sweep of the season against a ranked team, and then won four of six singles matches in straight sets to complete the shutout. It was the Stags' first shutout against the Sagehens since the 2014 SCIAC Tournament championship match. CMS improves to 22-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Athenas Outlast No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer in Sixth Street Showdown

It took just over four hours for the most recent installment of the Sixth Street rivalry to come to a close, but when the dust settled at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center it was the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team that emerged with a hard-fought, 8-1 victory over the No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Athenas claimed the first point of the day with an 8-2 victory on the second doubles court by the team of Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC). CMS held a slim 2-1 lead after doubles play thanks to another victory from Harvey Mudders, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) on court three.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) announced the All-American Athletes of the Year Awards for the 2017-18 school year and of the 500 named from 230 schools across all divisions, three Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletes earned the honor. The award recognizes athletic accomplishments and dedication to strength and conditioning. Football’s Mackenzie Cooney (CMC), men’s basketball’s Maxwell Kirsch (CMC), and lacrosse’s Corie Hack (CMC) were all honored with the award.

The No. 22 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team defended their home turf with a 17-3 victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in the Sixth Street Rivalry on Wednesday night. Corie Hack (CMC) and Evan Murphy (CMC) each tallied four goals to lead the Athenas’ offense as CMS improved their winning streak to 13 games. The Athenas allowed just nine shots on goal in the game with Anna Gillespie (SC), the defending SCIAC Player of the Week, making six saves.
