NCAA Tournament Begins Friday in Texas for Athenas

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team is making their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and ninth appearance in program history. This year's journey begins in Georgetown, Texas on the campus of Southwestern University with one of the toughest regionals in the country. The grouping features eight teams with four squads ranked in the top six in the most recent AVCA National Rankings.

The No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team is heading to Southwestern (TX) for the NCAA Division III Regionals. On Monday morning, the NCAA released the field for the 64-team Women’s Volleyball Championships and the bracket has the Athenas traveling to Georgetown, Texas for the opening rounds of the tournament.

On Saturday night the No. 6 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas made quick work of the Cal Lutheran women’s volleyball team in the SCIAC Tournament Finals by sweeping the Regals 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-16) to claim the 2017 SCIAC Tournament Championship. Shelbi Stein (CMC) collected 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage to be named the Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Stags Topped by Panthers on Road

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team fell to the Chapman Panthers 48-38 on Saturday night. The Stags trailed 28-7 late in the first-half, but battled back and cut the margin to just four at 28-24 in the third quarter after a pair of touchdown runs from Spencer Sheff (CMC) and Garrett Cheadle (HMC) and a 43-yard field goal from Mitchell Allan (CMC). CMS could not keep pace with the high-scoring Chapman attack and despite Cheadle punching in a one-yard touchdown late, the Stags fell 48-38.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team scored nine goals in the second-half to top the La Verne Leopards on Saturday morning 12-7. Five different Stags scored two goals apiece in the game and Ethan Lewis (CMC) made 12 saves to help CMS to their second-straight victory.

The No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas swept the Chapman Panthers on Wednesday night in the SCIAC Semifinals 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) to punch their ticket to the SCIAC Championship on Saturday evening. The Athenas featured a balanced offensive effort that included six different players with at least five kills.

On Thursday afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the All-Conference teams for women’s cross country. Bryn McKillop (SC) was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year to lead nine Athenas on All-Conference teams. In addition to the nine runners honored, John Goldhammer and the Athenas’ coaching staff was named the Coaching Staff of the Year in the SCIAC.

Late Thursday afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the All-Conference teams for men’s cross country. Sophomore Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) and senior Kevin Huang (HMC) were among the 20 student-athletes honored, both earning First Team accolades.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team claimed the 2017 SCIAC Championship by putting together a 15-1 conference record during the regular season. As a result, the Athenas enter this week’s SCIAC Tournament as the top seed and will hold home court advantage in the Semifinals on Thursday and the potential Championship Game on Saturday.

On Wednesday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s water polo team handed the Occidental Tigers a 15-10 loss in Taylor Pool. Christian Thornton (CMC) scored four goals on just four shots to lead five Stags with multiple goals in the victory for CMS. Ethan Lewis (CMC) made seven saves in goal to secure the win.

On Wednesday morning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released their All-Conference women’s soccer teams. Among the student-athletes honored were a pair of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas. Jacey Coniff (HMC) and Rhiann Holman (CMC) were named First Team All-SCIAC with Coniff also being named the SCIAC Award of Distinction winner for 2017.

Less than a week removed from claiming the 2017 SCIAC Championship, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team had five Athenas named All-Conference. Opposite hitter Margaux Arntson (CMC) led four players on the First Team by being named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year while head coach Kurt Vlasich and the rest of the Athenas’ coaching staff was named the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year.
