No. 1 Emory Needs Late Push to Edge No. 3 Women's Tennis

For the second time in as many days, the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country. On Sunday afternoon the Athenas fell just short against the No. 1 Emory Eagles by a 5-4 final score. After dropping two of the three doubles matches, the Athenas won the first two singles points to take a 3-2 lead early in singles play. The Eagles battled back and won two of the next three points to level the match at 4-4 with just the top singles match still being played.

Stags Fall to Middlebury and Oxy in Sunday Twin Bill

March 25, 2018

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team dropped both ends of a Sunday doubleheader, falling to the Middlebury Panthers 10-8 in 10 innings and the Occidental Tigers 11-2. Against Middlebury, CMS rallied late, scoring three in the sixth, three in the eighth, and two in the ninth to send the game into extras. In Game Two, Occidental scored early runs and road a strong pitching performance to the 11-2 victory. The Occidental win gave the three-game weekend series to the Tigers, two games to one.

Hawks and Bears, Too Strong for CMS in Axelrood Pool

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team dropped both of their matches on Saturday against stiff competition. In the morning match, the Athenas fell to No. 13 Hartwick College 16-7, before dropping their second game of the day to Brown University by an 11-7 final. Amelia Ayala (CMC), Roxy Kiessling (CMC), and Aracelia Aldrete (CMC) each registered three goals on the day to lead the Athenas' offense.

Athenas Muzzle Bulldogs with Strong Midgame Run

March 24, 2018

The No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team ran away from the University of Redlands Bulldogs with a 10-goal scoring streak in the middle of the game to earn their 10th-victory of the season at 15-6. After 20 minutes of the game, CMS held a slim 4-3, after the Athenas and Bulldogs traded goals in the early going. CMS picked the scoring up, notching six consecutive goals in the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 10-3 lead into the break.

Jay Yeam earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #3 singles in the Stags' match against George Fox.
Men's Tennis Earns Two More Wins Over Ranked Teams

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team earned a pair of victories over nationally-ranked teams on Saturday, defeating No. 17 Tufts University 7-2 and No. 34 George Fox University 8-1. On the day, the Stags went 11-1 in singles play en route to a pair of comfortable victories. The two victories improves the Stags to 15-2 on the season. CMS will host the No. 11 Williams Ephs at 5:00 p.m on Tuesday in their next clash against a nationally ranked team.

Softball Falls to Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC Doubleheader

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team saw their win-streak come to an end at 10 games when they dropped both games in Saturday’s twin bill at Pomona-Pitzer. The Athenas fell by one run in both contests, dropping Game One 5-4 on a walk-off base hit before coming up short, 3-2, in Game Two. CMS now sits at a record of 18-6 overall and 7-5 in SCIAC play.

Stags and Tigers Split Doubleheader to Begin SCIAC Series

March 24, 2018

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team split a doubleheader with the Occidental Tigers on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-2 victory in Game Two after dropping Game One by a 7-3 final. Justin Hull (CMC) highlighted the day on the mound, tossing eight innings in the second game of the doubleheader, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out eight to earn his third victory of the season.

No. 2 Ephs Halt Winning Streak at 16 for No. 3 Women's Tennis

The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team had their 16-match winning streak snapped on Saturday against the No. 2 Williams Ephs in a dramatic 5-4 decision. The match came down to the final court, but the Ephs had just enough left in the tank to earn the three-set victory on court six to clinch the match. Things do not get any easier for the Athenas. CMS is next in action on Sunday when they host the No. 1 Emory Eagles at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at 10:00 a.m.

Regals Top Athenas in Low-Scoring SCIAC Match

In a low-scoring, defensive battle the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s water polo team fell to the Cal Lutheran Regals by an 8-4 final in Axelrood Pool on Saturday morning. Four different Athenas scored in the game for CMS and Cal Lu’s Victoria Meek led all scorers with three goals in the game.

Hollimon Leads Stags to 25th-Place Finish at Nationals

Three members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team competed in the 2018 NCAA National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. this week. The Stags earned 27 team points during the week to finish in a tie for 25th place nationally. Kendall Hollimon (CMC) led the Stags all week long, earning a pair of All-American honors with his performances in the Three- and One-Meter diving competitions. Hollimon finished in fourth-place on the three-meter board (518.45 points) and a seventh-place finish on the one-meter board (448.25 points) to account for all 27 of the Stags' team points in the Championships.

Athenas Finish 19th at NCAA National Championships

Eleven members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team competed in the 2018 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. this week. The Athenas earned 34 points as a team to finish the Championships in 19th-place as a team. It was a team effort for the Athenas at the National Championships, CMS had a total of eight different Athenas contribute to the team point total. Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) and Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) anchored the effort for CMS earning Honorable Mention accolades in individual events while also aiding the team effort in relays. Crawford won the Consolation Finals in the 50 Free in a time of 23.34 while Bacon-Brenes finished 14th in the 100 Breast in a time of 1:03.88. CMS also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the 200 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relay.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s track and field team had a successful showing at the SDSU Invitational, highlighted by a standout performance by Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) on Friday in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The only Division III school in the competition on Saturday, the Stags held their own against some of the top programs in the country.

The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s track and field team made an impression this weekend alongside top Division I and II programs at the SDSU Invitational. The weekend began with a new CMS record and top Division III time from Bryn McKillop (SC) in the 1500m. On Day Two, Tyra Abraham (SC) set a new CMS record and top Division III time in the 100 meter dash.

Seems like only yesterday I got the call from Head Football Coach John Zinda – he was looking for a football/baseball coach. Two year head coach Pat Murphy decided to take the head coaching job at the University of Notre Dame. It was the summer of 1987 and a gallon of gas was 89 cents.
